Writing about finding our way through the rubble of the American empire and finding strength in despair. My pen name honors my ancestors who became Quakers and left their aristocratic family to relocate to Virgina in the 1600s...a radical act at the time.

re: Shadow Work:

Has your inner work on your personal shadows prepared you for what's happening in the world?

If not, what was its purpose? Was all that personal development you've done only for your own benefit? Or does it help you effectively engage with the world's lengthening shadows?

This is why we must engage and not hide: "Trump is a typical bully. He breaks norms and laws to see what he can get away with. If the opposition is weak, he steamrolls forward. If the opposition is strong, he slinks away..." ---- 4/14/25 email from Ezra Levin

Greenpeace needs public support right now about the secrecy and bias in the court case it just lost. It's been ordered to pay $667M for training and funding Indigenous-led protests at Standing Rock. The pro-Trump pipeline company is leading the charge to criminalize protest and inhibit free speech.

Here's data and a readable report on the impact of the corporatization of health care in New Mexico. Don't buy the myth that maybe rural hospitals really do need to cut budgets because they're not profitable. Not so simple. It's "buy, strip, flip" and blame patients www.nmsop.org/_files/ugd/7...

Poet, lawyer and civil servant Hakim Bellamy wrote this poem for the People's March in Albuquerque in January 2025. It's rhythms are infectious and its feminist message is powerful. He speaks directly/indirectly to Trump.

To everybody thinking about starting their own nonprofit or movement group to respond to this chaos: Don't!
Instead, work with existing organizations. Too often egos lead to the creation of nonprofits that duplicate the missions of existing ones and fragment efforts of social change. 501c3lookup.org

Remember that posting on social media doesn't actually accomplish much of anything, although sharing info can educate each other. We're preaching to the choir here. The real question is, "What are you going to do in the 'real world'? Anger is no better than overwhelm if it diverts us from action.

And it begins. They're trying to do it out of sight to make it out of mind.
Panama’s security minister "told reporters the migrants were not 'detained' by the Panamanian government but rather 'are under our protection'"...

... one of the detained people "sent a text message saying that the authorities were confiscating all phones. Her last words: 'Please try to help us.'"

The group of unauthorized migrants, which includes children, were bused to the camp late Tuesday night. “It looks like a zoo, there are fenced cages,” said one of the detainees.

Great, meaty book from 2023. We need its wisdom as we build alliances and develop existing movements. Let's not eat each other as we organize, okay?

Indigenous political prisoner Leonard Peltier is finally free! Well, not 100%, as Biden gave him clemency not a pardon, but he is back home in the Turtle Mountain community in North Dakota. The case for prosecuting him was always weak.

“Rather than ceding to the right’s distortions, the left could use this moment to make legible what DEI policies…do to make workers lives more stable and humane, could emphasize that this is not niche stuff for college campuses; it is policy that enables more humans more access to better lives.”
Wrote about the morally vacuous, strategically unsound (and also wrong!) anti-“woke”diagnosis everyone’s still sticking with, even in the midst of civil rights apocalypse.

Trump and his minions are creating death, chaos and destruction -- ushered in with fictional stories of waste, fraud and abuse.

Death, chaos and destruction.

Words create beliefs. The coup leaders have put the other three words on the tips of every American's tongue.

Change the script.

We're going to need mutual care networks independent of government and possibly also of nonprofits, since the whole nonprofit sector is now vulnerable to attack. Here's resources for thinking about how we might make mutual aid projects happen: www.publicbooks.org/the-revoluti...

On Audre Lorde’s birthday, I’m thinking about her Kitchen Table Press.

She (second from left), Barbara Smith, Cherrie Moraga and Hattie Gossett came together to establish a press centering feminist and lesbians of color — and it shook the publishing industry. #bhm

The legacy media is taking heat from both the left and the right now that it's caving to the billionaires while also being hated by the right wing. The Washington Post, which refused to endorse either presidential candidate, just refused to run an anti-Trump ad that it had already contracted to run:
