In somewhat terrifying but hopefully positive personal news, I've decided to purchase an extremely expensive 10x10 booth in the exhibit hall at the American Geophysical Union meeting in December. I'll be selling my gemstone and wire jewelry and art. I hope you'll come find me there.

Acetaminophen remains a safe pain relief option during pregnancy. Despite recent unfounded claims, there’s no clear evidence linking prudent use to fetal development issues. ACOG's guidance remains. When needed in pregnancy, acetaminophen should be used in moderation, after consulting a doctor.

@mikamckinnon.bsky.social Fascinated by the variety of glacier-transported rocks on the north slope of Mt Daniel in Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Sorry for lack of scale; the longest dimension of the very rusty one is ~10cm, ~30cm for the banded one, and ~1m for the pink one. How far did these travel?

I don’t see any mention of the CO2 concentration in the air? (Yes, they mention CO2 over the culture medium, but not during the airborne survival test, if I’m reading correctly). Other studies have shown that higher CO2 levels increase viability time. E.g www.nature.com/articles/s41...,

Carbon dioxide concentration has previously been used as a proxy for overall ventilation efficiency to indirectly estimate the risk of indoor SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Here, authors investigate whether...

Which leaves the question of how to get between the two; 10th Ave E is not great to bike on, but I do it all the time for lack of a better option. Federal Ave E is quiet but the pavement is atrocious.

Older: Broadway two-way protected bike lane.

Recently completed: the 11th Ave NE bike lane from University Bridge to 75th St. Wonderful; only complaint is that the natural route to go farther north is Roosevelt, but the two blocks along 75th to get there are extremely annoying.

Did it actually say “44” on it, or just stop at the 44’s stop? Possibly one of the employee shuttles run by Microsoft or Google?

It’s never been fixed in a major lineage before, though it had two (three?) tries at it. Haven’t looked yet which variants those were. (From cov-spectrum.org)

I have an Awair Element; I can’t speak to the absolute accuracy of its readings, but it certainly detects when I’m cooking. Spot when I made breakfast!

Any thoughts on whether the rest of the country is just weeks behind New York City or if there’s actually a difference in the immune landscape?

I don’t want to ride close to the traffic any more than you want me to! If I’m riding farther to the left than you think I should, it’s because I don’t think moving right is safe, either because of car doors or a terribly-maintained shoulder.

This week on the blog: closing thoughts on Gladiator II and how it treats the city of Rome, the Colosseum and gladiators and the Severan dynasty.

In particular, we look at why the real, historical Caracalla is history's crushing rebuttal to this film's own themes.

Last week, we started our nitpicking of Gladiator II (2024) by looking at the problems with the films chronology and its portrayal of the Roman army of the early third century, both in its equipmen…

I wrote a piece summarizing a few of the things Trump's pick to lead the NIH, Dr. Bhattacharya, got catastrophically wrong — especially in 2020.

I’ve criticized public authorities, including for nonsensical and excessive measures (closing parks and beaches?).

But let’s not rewrite history either.

I moved months ago. Today I passed by my old place.

All three crows appeared and requested peanuts. Which, fortunately, I had in my pockets.

Used to be my everyday wear, but I switched to structured respirators because they stay off your face better and are quicker to get on and off. FixTheMask is still the cheapest solution.
