Relevant to current conversations happening in Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. This problem isn’t exclusive to our society, and there aren’t great solutions.
The fact that conventions can't have a shared resource for People We Have Banned For Being Creeps &/or Assholes because such a document would be considered professional libel was a REAL EYE OPENER when I started conrunning.
The most maddening thing when talking about sex pests in media is that the genre actually doesn't matter. They're literally everywhere. And they love to form their own creepy networks. But if you respond in kind, somehow you're the problem.

This cannot be something a civilian law enforcement agent is allowed to wear in the US — and an agency that has a culture that tolerates this cannot be saved.
Fucking surreal that people dressed like this and carrying assault rifles are permitted to kidnap people off our streets

I am calling on @icegov.bsky.social Director Todd Lyons to immediately confirm or deny the existence of a “domestic terrorist” database. If true, you’re violating the Constitution. If not, maybe talk to your “border czar” to get your stories straight. This isn’t a game–it’s the Constitution.

"There is probably no single person who has done more damage and more harm to people across this country...than this man right here. It's our job...to hold him responsible for the crimes that are happening to U.S. citizens."

I've seen fossils in some remarkable places, but this takes the prize: the benthic foram Nummulites in the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza. These massive blocks were quarried from the Eocene Mokkatam Formation when a relictual population of woolly mammoths still lived on Wrangel Island.

Let‘s open this question up: who are the kindest, most wholesome paleontologists you know (Current/retired/historical/whatever)? Who SHOULD be featured in documentaries?

I’m tired of doomering, let’s focus on the bright lights among us.
Ok, so is there any non-creep paleo figure the public would recognize from the 80s through 2000s?

This. I’m *not* going to get into it here, but there have been & ARE STILL many problematic & predatory people. We try to keep people safe & keep an eye out for people. When you are young it’s easier to not always understand what situations you might be walking into. Not apologizing for anyone
Um, yes it really was bad during that time, sorry to say. A few exceptions, but even some grad students were to be avoided. The whisper network was a lifeline for many of us.
Currie and Gould definitely meet that standard, and people like Jenny Clack and Chris Brochu played prominent roles in various popular TV documentaries. It wasn't really all bad. Others weren't creeps or predators but just have reputations of being irresponsible in the field.
