Back in 2021, we hypothesized brain-heart interactions could signal mental processing, potentially detecting consciousness in unresponsive patients. And we succeeded: www.jneurosci.org/content/41/2...
Then Science and SfN gave us a shout-out for it: tinyurl.com/ytr67c5a www.jneurosci.org/spotlight
Newly detailed nerve links between brain and other organs shape thoughts, memories, and feelings
Studies of interoception challenge distinctions between disorders of the brain and body—and may hold clues to the basis of consciousness

More on the link brain-heart axis and sensorimotor function, relevant for BCI research 🤖: Different bodily rhythms are coupled with cortical regions at rest. Here we show that motor imagery triggers a decoupling of cardiac dynamics with motor cortex functional connectivity 🧠🫀 doi.org/10.1101/2025...
Imagined movement increases the segregation of brain-heart networks
Understanding the mechanisms of motor imagery, the mental simulation of movement without execution, is key for the development of neurotechnologies. For instance, for detecting covert motor intent in ...

📢Fully Funded PhD position in Barcelona!

I'm excited to announce that I’m opening a PhD position at @idibaps.bsky.social, Barcelona!
We'll investigate the role of bodily signals in autobiographical memory, using virtual reality, EEG and TMS, in healthy volunteers and patient populations.

I receive several requests of collaboration. Please don't take it personal if I decline your invitation. I'm just trying to keep coherence on my outputs, but I'm also being extra cautious, since a recent collaboration where I was kicked out without clear reason at the moment of manuscript writing.

Ah ha! Many consciousness studies might just not be valid, or at least exaggerated. Who would have thought that about this very healthy, pluralist and friendly field of research
🎉 Our paper "Criterion placement threatens the construct validity of neural measures of consciousness" is now out in eLife! 🎉
TL;DR: Both simulations and empirical data show that you should not post-hoc sort neural data based on subjective measures of consciousness.

Just published our study on brain-heart interactions and COVID-19. We found that brain-heart interactions at the ICU onset indexes mortality risk and acute encephalopathy duration. We also found that maladaptive dynamics are associated with acute cognitive impairment 👾

Saw this before as a preprint... We already knew that when we inhale, the whole brain (and body) "activates". So, I don't really get this "discovery". Probably because I'm not a fmri person. Maybe some of my interoception peeps can illuminate me? 🧐 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The brain and body are necessarily connected. Here the authors show that brain blood flow and electrical activity are coupled with systemic physiological changes in the body.
