do they think that the llms sprang from zeus’s head fully formed? that the computing power and means to use it were found laying around? where will new discoveries come from? the ‘average answer that sounds right’ machine? it really is a religion with these people.

i wonder if bluesky, which refuses to allow posts to be private, has any perverse incentives regarding its massive database of carefully alt-texted images in the age of llms. probably not, probably everyone is just really helping users of screen readers

bad echo chamber: joke misunderstanders

good echo chamber: people posting your name in three parentheses
There is something instructive in how a lot of mainstream columns have been expended castigating people for ‘closing themselves off’ in ‘echo chambers’ by not using that website, intentionally refusing to understand that some people might just not want to participate in an open, rancid nazi sewer.
If you are still on X, you are supporting this sewer.

unforch retrofitting every car built in the past with a speed governor or outlawing old cars would be some of the worst possible things to do if you care about climate change
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

‘spending massive amounts of compute on making content with an audience of one’ is the kind of genius idea that only the true chosen ones could come up with
Okay one reason why this concept won’t work is because nobody else wants to see the fake tv show you created with prompts. The only ones that will get traction will be the shitposting ideas, which will lead to lawsuits and c&d orders from the rights holders

universal programs are a public good in se! there is a ton of research and writing on administrative burden and programmatic universalism that directly opposes these positions and isn’t appearing in The News. there’s a reason for that and it’s not a good faith policy disagreement
Everyone is dunking on this piece but I think it's worth taking seriously. There's been good-faith debate among urbanists for years about whether free fares offer the best bang for the buck. It's OK to support a candidate and still subject their policies to scrutiny!

why would you not punish use of the plagiarism machine as plagiarism. you didn’t write it in your own words or cite the source it’s an academic integrity office issue?
New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays.

Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn.
