So having moaned about 'new music' earlier, wanna know what I have been enjoying? Coz it's time for January's #TutntableTurnOns, the new albums & reissues I've been listening to most this month...

Deerhoof: The Runners Four (2005)

Any Deerhoof album brings me joy but the 7 album run from 'Reveille' thru 'Deerhoof vs Evil" is just breathtakingly good. And this one is among the very best of them...

Thanks to @dep6000.bsky.social for prompting me to dig this absolute peach out for yet another spin, this mesmerising quartet are one of the very best out there... and they are 'out there' 😁

David Keenan: Xstabeth / The Towers The Fields The Transmitters

I've read a lot of Keenan but oddly not this until now. An alchemic conconcoction of the magickal, metaphysical, musical & surreal, both deeply engrossing & intermittently repellent, a wild & wondrous ride.

Anyway, put on Mingus' "The Clown" which, at nearly 70 years old, is exactly what I needed to listen to right now! Timeless.

Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon but there's a lot of new music out there that's 'good' but ultimately anonymous, that draws on impeccable influences but offers little new. And maybe if it's done well that doesn't matter, I dunno. But I find myself craving music that surprises more than comforts me.

Thorn Wych: Aesthesis (2025)

Missed last year's first pressing but man, I couldn't snap up a copy of the second fast enough! This is stunning; a blissful trip thru mind-melting outsider wyrd folk & otherwordly psychedelic ritual...

Been listening to the new Tinned Meats album today, sounds like a band I'd have seen on an Organ bill at the Monarch around '94 with Map, The Monsoon Bassoon, Walk On Water, Old Fruit...

This is very much a compliment 😁

The government’s suggestion that rolling out 20 minute courses on writing “AI“ prompts, sponsored by Google, Microsoft and Amazon, is somehow comparable to the founding of the Open University (the Wilson government‘s, & Jennie Lee’s, proudest achievement), is an insult to our human intelligence.
