⚠️In a final vote, the European Parliament sealed the fate of the few remaining environmental safeguards from EU farm policy, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) putting EU farming at risk⚠️
🗑️💢 @europarl.europa.eu just cleared away the few remaining environmental safeguards in EU farming policy

Two rushed rounds of so-called “simplifications” have gutted years of progress and handed #BigAgri exactly what it wanted: money to pollute with no strings attached ✂️

Here’s what we’ve lost ⬇️

Precedent could have far-reaching consequences. Who is to say the rights of gay citizens won’t be the next target by a coalition of hostile states?

“The misogynistic imagery essential to the anti-European mentality of the American right supports the idea that the EU, being effeminate, is innately weak and will break under pressure from manly America. But the world does not conform to such idiotic prejudices.”

I walked the Abhainn trail today and loved Rosie's concept. The app needs to be a bit more walker-friendly though! Let the audio run in the background, so you can take photos or put your phone in your pocket. Having to walk with it open in your hand, on a river trail, is asking for trouble 😀

1. We should talk about the prevailing reaction to Signalgate – utter disbelief. People who know something abt national security, military affairs, gov't secrets & the law appear stunned by the clowns, idiots & buffoons who “accidentally texted” classified war plans to the editor of The Atlantic.

I wrote a piece for @irishtimes.com about OpenAI’s short story. I feel if we don’t make a concerted effort as humans to help people of all ages gain literacy around AI-generated content, we have no chance at being able to have a consensus reality. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...
Jennifer Walshe: OpenAI’s short story about grief has critics in floods of tears or outrage. They’re all missing the point
Judging this story as I’d judge a short story published in The Stinging Fly or the Winter Papers is the wrong approach to take. Reading AI-generated stories demands a new type of literacy

I’m Jewish and the son of Jewish refugees who immigrated to America, so some might accuse me of seeing antisemitism where it doesn’t exist. So it’s sadly reassuring to see that the great historian Timothy Snyder saw the Oval Office debacle the way I did:

“Washington has become the court of Nero,” Senator Claude Malhuret declared before the French Parliament this week. His speech, whose dark urgency and stark rhetorical force made it a social-media sensation, has been translated and adapted by The Atlantic:
Trump Is Nero While Washington Burns
‘Trump’s message is that being his ally serves no purpose, because he will not defend you.’

Hard to believe but 18 years ago, I sent the great Alfonso Cuaron an advance copy of The Shock Doctrine and asked if he might be willing to write a blurb.

He made a short film instead. This is it. Still chills me.
