#pretendpanel November 15th: have a little reflection on your writing

Hit the first of two important chapters I know need major surgery in my WIP redraft. Am being bold. Promoting the uncanny. Taking risks with metaphor and pov. Feeling liberated

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
#pretendpanel, fascinating takes as always yesterday, thank you! A change of pace today...

November 15th: Halfway through the month! How's it going so far? (Whether you're in a November challenge or not, have a little reflection on your writing)

#pretendpanel November 8th: (outside of November challenges) do you have a daily goal most of the time?

Nah. Being a plantser, writing roles change daily. My goal is consistent morning hours not words. Saying that, hitting 2-3k gives me the feels

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
#pretendpanel heyyyyy it's me, even though I may look different (still need to change the graphic to have my new handle lol)

November 8th: (outside of November challenges, if you partake) do you have a daily/weekly/monthly goal most of the time?

#pretendpanel October 25th: Any treats you give yourself to help making the writing process easier?

No.
Treatz Meanz Breakz.
I wake, warm up on porridge, grab a thermos of coffee, then it's fingers to keyboard and catch those early brain worms

#pretendpanel, I like today's question a lot 😍 Thank you again @longwaydownbook.bsky.social for writing this month's questions!

#pretendpanel October 24th: Is there anything about the writing process or about any of your writing projects that brings you life?

Increasingly my writing fills my life, in contrast to how living my life once stood in the way of my writing.

Hello #pretendpanel! Can't believe how fast this month has gone. Tell me...

#pretendpanel October 18th: Is there anything about the writing process that drains you?

Two things: knowing when to stop feeding my revisions.

And, us vamps may agree, social media promo sucks energy--a door to cold light that burns our pride.

#pretenpanel October 17th: They say sometimes you have to kill your darlings. Which of your darlings just don't stay dead?

Subverting this. Darlings from completed short stories often hail me to write them as MCs in longer works, as with my WIP.

Hello #pretenpanel! Dropping this before a busy day tomorrow, so I will be delayed in responding, but I am keen to know...

I think they're pretty much of a sameness. They're all built around the journey and archetypes. I'm a three-stager who recognises the rules, then subverts as much as possible without breaking the patterns entirely.
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

#pretendpanel October 11th: Is there a deceased author, writer, or poet that you've really connected with?

Spookily, I have a graveyard full: Matheson, Bradbury, du Saint-Exupery, Eliot TS, Straub, du Maurier, Rice, cummings, Jackson, Yoshimura

#pretendpanel I can't wait to catch up with your responses! Life is super busy here - I'm at a fundraising dinner right now - but let me know...

Hello #pretendpanel October 4th: How have you explored fear in your writing?

My WIP is horror, but the fear it explores is as much about being haunted by the pressures of love, adolescence and friendship as about genre and supernatural elements.

#PretendPanel October 3: scariest thing to write?

I write horror but the scariest thing is the responsibility to get characters right. It is in the writer's gift to walk a mile in others' shoes, but with a duty to research and representation.

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
#pretendpanel, I'm thrilled to be bringing you a month (of weekends) of questions by @longwaydownbook.bsky.social. Here's the first...

#pretendpanel September 26th: Do you have a favourite character that you've written?

Boring but honest answer. I love the character I'm collaborating with at the moment I'm writing them. No matter how good or bad. Intensely so with first person.

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
I've gotta know, #pretendpanel...

September 26th: Do you have a favourite character that you've written?

September 26, 2025 at 8:28 AM
#pretendpanel September 20th: do you write the same character over and over again?

When I'm developing an idea--and that won't be until I freewrite a bit--I cast the characters to act/write. I avoid archetypes. I want new shoes to walk in. So, no

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
#pretendpanel I have a potentially difficult question for some of you today...

September 20th: Be honest, its ok... do you kinda write the same character over and over again?

#pretendpanel September 19th: what makes a character memorable?

In truth it's a pick 'n mix. But two things especially: the struggle for agency should be credible and relatable; MCs should perform psychic distance with the range of great singers.

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
I hope you're doing well today, #pretendpanel! Tell me...

September 19th: Can you put your finger on what makes a character memorable in your opinion? E.g. dialogue, qualities, motivations etc.

#pretendpanel Sep 6th: self-insert character?

No. The character world occurs in the liminal space between head and page. Any doppelganger effect resolves over drafts and edits. I stir all characters with a salt of difference from their influences

#pretendpanel Sep 5th: Where do your characters come from?

If starts as a casting from story character demands. I like to see how they breathe on the page before developing their backgrounds, beliefs, desires, tastes etc. Keep it a wee loose.

#WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
#pretendpanel, it's that time we've been waiting for... character focus time!

Charlotte, thank you so much for the past month. I frequently revisie tips I've noted down from various writing sources, but your tools are fantastic bite-size revision aids, and look like this on my phone. Great to dip into and contemplate. What a star you are. Best of luck with your own writing.

I like to partner chatacters up particularly in their response to the major themes. I suppose it is mainly 'mirroring', and it has relevance to a lot of the tools Charlotte has spoken about --e.g. character agency and foreshadowing-- but, as the story unfolds, the characters may become foils too.

I think you're right to suggest knowing the impact you want from your writing is not necessarily the same as knowing these terms, useful though that is. I find editing out loud is a great way to refresh impact, or fine-tune voice. Lovely examples for the use of many or no conjunctions BTW Charlotte

Day 29: Rhetorical Devices

I've been a fan of unreliable narrators since I was exposed to Robert Browning's Dramatis Personae. Levels of U.N. range from self-deception to delusional but my favourite trick is to wind back and reveal the truth behind the misdirection. Sometimes the narrator turns out to be half-right after all.
