Finnish authorities conducted ROV inspections of the EAGLE S hull at approximately 12 meters depth. The investigation team reports finding multiple fresh paint chips and impact marks on the vessel's port bow area, which authorities indicate could be consistent with anchor chain damage.

Yi Peng 3 dropped its anchor into the Baltic Sea. Went dark on AIS and dragged it along the bottom, destroyed comms cables. Hull and anchor bear traces of the deed.

Investigators suspect pre-mediation and that RU intelligence directed it.

🚢✂️The Case of Yi Peng 3: A Vessel with a Hidden Agenda
Bulk carriers typically follow straightforward, predictable routes, but Yi Peng 3 exhibited erratic behavior—zigzagging in ways uncharacteristic of its vessel type.

Update on Yi Peng 3: The ship slowed down over three nautical cables, 12 NM northeast of Læsø on Nov 7, 2024. Maritime sources call the maneuver suspicious. Link to my latest piece is in the post belov.

There is intense naval activity around suspected cable sabotage ship Yi Peng 3.

2 x RIBs in water, navy and coast guards vessels are maneuvering around YP3. 7 ships total.

Besides known units during night A516+A512 (DE) arrived: ship roles are carrying fuel/supplies/ammo and act as command posts.

Finally had some time to dig into the subsea cable cuts in the Baltic Sea that have gotten a lot of attention lately.

Due to the rich fabric of connectivity in the region, the loss of the two cables caused minimal disruption.

However, here are some subtle BGP impacts I was able to identify. 🧵

Zoomed out replay of DE Coast Guard RIB* NAVIS 211 MMSI: 211809100 as she spent 2 minutes moving slowly alongside Yi Peng 3.

Ill @fouthtimelucky.bsky.social or some other navy sailor tell us if it is a boarding. Looks like it?

Sources in the Swedish investigation have informed SVT that Yi Peng 3 has stopped voluntarily, police are considering boarding it but don't yet have required substantial evidence it's been involved in a crime in Swedish waters, and the authorities cannot force the vessel to stay in the area.

Current situation: YI PENG 3 has been at anchor overnight in the Kattegat, with HDMS SOELOEVEN next to it in 0.5nm distance.
During night HDMS HVIDBJOERNEN steamed towards them and turned AIS off 3 hours ago. Most likely it has been on scene for past 2 hours already.
