My hot take re: Ilya's Russian background coming up a lot more than Shane's Wasian background is that you have to understand how allergic Asians are to talking about important things with words. Shane gets a great grade in repression, a thing that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

Of the thousand moments of Ep 6 that live rent free in my mind, I keep coming back to the cinematographic choice to not show us Shane's face when he says 'Boyfriend?'
It's not a fully coherent thought but there's something there about how it forces the viewer to engage, to imagine, to extrapolate
