On offer is a highly constricted definition of academic freedom.
BREAKING: For the first time, the UNC System could soon define “academic freedom” across North Carolina’s public universities.

The move comes as professors and administrators warn that Trump administration policies are threatening their rights.

UNC System Board Weighs Defining, Setting 'Parameters' for Academic Freedom
The proposed policy explains the concept the same way a faculty group did last fall, but system leaders added limitations on what is protected.

AI running 8-week online course to replace faculty teaching 16-week semester. This is right-wing and tech utopianists' idea of "helping" higher ed students. Charge them same amount, but make them believe it's better bc they finish faster and can back to full-time jobs.

Old Dominion University is trying to compress 16-week courses into 8-week online courses for the 2026 fall semester — and fully integrate AI without faculty input.

Isaac Kamola, AAUP’s Director of the Center for the Defense of Academic Freedom, explains why this is a “nightmare.”

I wish I could remember who said they wish they had cultural power but they're trying to use political power in its place. They can remove the signs. They cannot remove all the histories, primary documents, and collective knowledge of the past, and their attacks underscore why these things matter.
Signs about the history of slavery in the U.S. and the 9 people George Washington enslaved are being removed right now at the President’s House Site in Philadelphia, across from Independence Hall, months after the Trump administration threatend to do so.

How far we have not come in 250 years.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.
