I am a Bioinformatics Engineer working on Product Development for Illumina. I am interested in anything genomics 🧬 , diabetes 💉, or space 🚀related!

I recently wrote about exploring my own diabetes genomic variants here: dddiaz.com/post/hla/

This is Epic! 🚀 Axiom Mission 4 will research the accuracy of continuous glucose monitors #CGM and the viability of different insulins in space! With the end goal to "eventually fly a crew member with the condition". #T1D #diabetes

A parent with #T1D gives the child a sub-5 % early-life risk, but a parent who carries a T1D genetic burden in the top 1% can push the child’s risk higher (even if that parent does not have #T1D!) So in some cases PGS > Family History of T1D (excluding if both parents have T1D)

Effects of parental autoimmune diseases on type 1 diabetes in offspring can be partially explained by HLA and non-HLA polymorphisms

Just finished reading #Abundance by Ezra Klein and
@dkthomp.bsky.social . Well worth it! The authors sum up the book well in the first chapter: "This book is dedicated to a simple idea: to have the future we want, we need to build and invent more of what we need." #booksky

Afreeza is a form of inhaled #insulin I use, in addition to normal insulin in my insulin pump. It’s super fast acting ( starts working in 30 minutes ) and i think it’s great. Today i decided to look up its full cost in cvs… 😅😅😅

4 life changing technologies I use made possible by #NIH Research and the "Special Diabetes Program":

- #Tandem Control IQ (Insulin delivery algorithm)
- #Omnipod 5 (Insulin Pump)
- #Dexcom G6 (Continuous Glucose Monitor)
- Glucagon gvoke (Life saving low blood sugar treatment)

Illumina's Innovation Roadmap: 👀 www.illumina.com/science/geno...

- Constellation mapped reads (sequencing with no library prep!)
- Spatial transcriptomics
- 5-base solution for methylation
- Multiomic data analysis

Pretty exciting if you ask me, but I am biased 😂

5 lessons I learned in 2024:
1. The value of emotional intelligence
2. We do things because they are hard
3. The Internet is not a valid "third place"
4. Diabetes research is still advancing rapidly
5. Eclipses are cool.
