So many in media are ill-equipped to interview officials about what’s happening because they begin with the presumption of legitimacy and don’t know enough about history or U.S. foreign policy to foment intelligent pushback and hold officials accountable.

Imagine being an opposition figure or supporter in Venezuela. Even if you were glad to see Maduro go, you have to now be at best ambivalent after seeing Trump be so focused on your oil and so little interested in democracy. In fact, Trump can't even pretend to care about democracy.

European leaders refusing to condemn US aggression in Venezuela is infuriating, but not surprising. Of course, it might be argued Trump has them over a barrel on Ukraine. But if defending the rules-based world order is that important, then it surely demands criticizing Trump's actions in Venezuela.

I really fear that this illegal war on Venezuela will prove, in the short term, to be a quick, relatively bloodless success, and elected Republicans will feel emboldened to defend it, neocons will cheerlead it and then the (mainstream) media class will quietly fall in line.

The US is the most dangerous country in the world. Not because its superior military will always temp unprincipled leaders to misadventures around the world. No, because of the combination of the aforementioned fact and the disinterest of its citizens in what their government is doing in the world.

At first I thought this was after their meeting. But it's actually before. I think this means that Trump doesn't need much convincing to go to war against Iran. Because short of installing a puppet regime, there's no world in which Iran doesn't produce ballistic missiles for deterrence.
