I propose that countries outside the US should impose tariffs on the US, but they should call them “mad king taxes”. Each time Trump does something stupid relating to that country, they increase by 1%. They go to zero and Trump leaves office.

Mandating that social media platforms provide a non-algorithmic feed option is a really interesting idea: www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12...
I already do this on the two platforms I’m on (bsky and linked in)

Many things that are strange in American come from the minimum wage being too low. Tipping culture for example. Just pay people a fair wage rather than adding a tax enforced by shame.
I'm no economist but the fact that more than 42 million Americans (1 in 8!) are on SNAP (i.e., food stamps) says that the federal minimum wage is way too low.

In case you missed this last night, President says he will order future aircraft carriers go back to steam catapults, which would require a major redesign of the in-production Ford class ships.

As reason, Trump appears to dislike magnets, including a belief that they stop working when wet
NAVY NEWS: In an address on the USS George Washington in Japan, the President says he will issue an EO requiring future Ford-class aircraft carriers to revert to steam catapults and hydraulic elevators, speaking at length of his distrust of "magnets"

Not kidding

Executive Order To Go Back To Steam Catapults On New Aircraft Carriers Coming: Trump
The electromagnetic catapults and weapons elevators for Ford class carriers have historically been a headache, but changing now would create immense challenges.

Who Goes MAGA?
With apologies to Dorothy Thompson, whose 1941 essay in Harper’s, “Who Goes Nazi?” remains a worthwhile read on the cultural archetypes of who is drawn to fascism, and who would never go down such a path. It felt like it could use a modern updating, however. Update: Just after I finished writing this, it occurred to me that there was no chance I was the first to think of doing this, so I did a search and sure enough, the writer Talia Lavin had the same idea months ago.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

It's really, really hard to assess whether someone is a good developer. The people who look like good developers are often the worst.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

It's all just linear models. Statistics is, like, three linear algebra operations in a probability-shaped trenchcoat.
