To help us prepare for the 250th anniversary of American independence next year, President Trump is reminding us of why the American colonists rebelled.

The more I read about GA Gov. Eugene Talmadge in 1941, the more I think we're a horrible time warp.

From the Atlanta Constitution, 11/30/1941; headline begins, "Talmadge Full-Blown American Fascist."

That's an actual quote: "I reckon I have got what you'd call a minor dictatorship."

Yesterday on NPR, a short piece on on the history and growing popularity of the word "y'all." "Written instances of 'y'all' date to 17th century England," but there's no citation to that fascinating fact. Fortunately, there's a link in the print version.

Y'all, we need to talk about 'y'all'
The word fills an important gap in our language, but it was once stigmatized. The story of "y'all" also includes powerful cultural forces, from hip-hop to ideas of welcoming inclusivity.

In Jim Crow Atlanta, even the courtesy of being called “Mr.” or “Mrs.” was denied to Black people.

But in one overgrown cemetery, headstones quietly pushed back – restoring dignity in death where it was denied in life.

How Black Americans combated racism from beyond the grave
Tombstones that used the honorifics ‘Mr.’ and ‘Mrs.’ restored a sense of dignity to people who had been denied it in life.

Librarians are some of the most detail-oriented, policy driven, and dare I say it neurotic people I know and I know lots of them. Books are chosen and recommended carefully. And yet politicians think they know better than librarians to the point to where they threaten them with imprisonment.

Let’s find out what they mean by “anti-Christian bias” in the State Department!

I suspect they mean a failure to promote Christian nationalism.
"To that end, I have twenty questions for Mr. Rubio, and I encourage all reporters covering him and the State Department to be candid in seeking clarification on what constitutes 'anti-Christian bias' under his new policy..."

A reminder that "So help me God" is not in the presidential oath of office specified by the Constitution, and was a creation of 19th-century Christian nationalists

How Christian nationalism played a role in incorporating the phrase ‘so help me God’ in the presidential oath of office
The phrase ‘so help me God’ is believed to be a part of the presidential oath ever since George Washington is said to have used it 236 years ago. Except, says a historian - there is no evidence of it.
