On New Year's Day 1965 Soupy Sales #BOTD was suspended for a week after exhorting his young viewers to empty their fathers' wallets and mothers' purses and send him "all those little green pieces of paper with pictures of Washington, Franklin, Lincoln and Jefferson on them."

I am perversely nostalgic for a vanished era when news of this sort would keep me up all night with anxiety and anger because it didn't happen all the time

‘Cancel’ comes from a Latin word meaning “to make like a lattice.”

When people needed to annul or void a document, they sometimes would mark it with crosshatches

XXXXX

which resembled a lattice.

So the document became ‘canceled.’

...we hope this post doesn’t get us that.

Butter-Cups Cereal (1965-circa 1967): Puffed, light, crispy, flower-shaped corn cereal pieces from General Mills. A commercial featured children picking and eating real-life buttercups (which are poisonous), which led to parental complaints of copycat behavior and ultimately its discontinuation

I hate these charts so much because they imply chatgpt is comparable to the internet or phones

You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet
In 2025, AI became pervasive in American life and the economy, with ChatGPT surging in adoption much faster than any other major technology in memory. @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Male Buffleheads are adorable little ducks that look to be black and white until the sunlight hits them just right. Then the beautiful greens and purples of their iridescent feathers are shown.

I miss movie tie-in reprints of the source books.
My 1969 edition for the movie launch. I have never seen it in print since, which is a real shame. It's a gut punch of a novella.
It sold for 95 cents new, this used copy purchased maybe decade later set me back a buck. #filmsky 📽️

1969.

CBS pulled the final Smothers Brothers episode featuring David Steinberg, but it aired without controversy on CTV in Canada.

Tommy Smothers flew to Toronto and invited the media to watch it on CTV in his Yorkville hotel room.

Read all about it in my new book, to be released in Nov 2026.
