14 years ago today I had to say goodbye to my Dad. He always told me that a lost loved one is the brightest star in the night sky.
I use the night sky to feel close to him, it brings me peace.

Spent a few nights this week collecting data on the Eastern Veil Nebula in Cygnus. This is part of a huge supernova remnant, the aftermath of a massive star that exploded about 8,000 years ago.

This is in SHO, a less common choice for this target.

Kicking off the new academic year tomorrow with a hands-on making session . . . a group of teachers have asked me to help them explore fossils through 3D making. It's a bit like asking the Cookie Monster to do training about biscuits. 😆😆😆

The Pacman Nebula, officially known as NGC 281, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is named for its resemblance to the classic 1980s video game character. This vast cloud of ionized gas is a star-forming region located approximately 9,200 light-years away in our galaxy's Perseus Spiral Arm. The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is the closest major spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way, located about 2.5 million light-years away. It is the largest and most massive member of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way, Andromeda, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 50 other smaller galaxies. NGC 1027 is an open star cluster located in the constellation Cassiopeia. Discovered by William Herschel in 1787, it appears visually positioned between the famous Heart and Soul nebulae, though it is not physically associated with them The Pleiades, or M45, is a dazzling open star cluster located in the constellation Taurus. Also known as the "Seven Sisters," this famous celestial object is one of the most visible star clusters and has captured the human imagination for millennia.

Located about 1,300 light-years away in Cepheus, the Iris glows as starlight reflects off cosmic dust, illuminating the surrounding dark interstellar clouds.

Captured over 21 hours of exposure time (and still adding more!), this cosmic cloud lies about 2,400 light-years away in Cepheus. Its dark dust lanes and glowing gas create the illusion of a celestial cave, where new stars are born. #astrophotography

Jupiter and Venus at 4am this morning, against a sprinkling of Gemini stars

I missed out on their closest apparent approach, which was yesterday, but they'll remain very close together in the early Eastern sky for several days yet

It's rare to be able to get 2 planets in the same field of view of my 4" telescope. Venus was dazzling at magnitude -4, with Jupiter very bright at mag -1.9, and they looked gorgeous against the dark blue twilight sky, hugging the treeline at only 10° altitude. This is a stack of 10 x 2 second exposures, which has given a largely noise-free image.

The Moon is currently on its orbit at a close approach to Earth. Approximately 370km away. It'll be more than 30km further by the time it reaches the end of this cycle.

The squish decided to take a rare nap, so I sketched for an hour. I came across a beautiful sketch by @marymcintyreastro.bsky.social of Ptolemaeus, Alphonsus, and Arzachel and felt inspired. At first, I wasn't happy, but I reminded myself to trust the process. I think it turned out okay 🌙✨
