Cover positions (covering for an editor on leave) are a great way to get started in scientific editing. I know several people who thrived at journals from this starting point.
If you're a good fit for the editor role, there will be a path forward when the cover ends

Many journals and funders have very strict guidelines forbidding the use of LLM in peer review. This is something @davalamo.bsky.social discuss often with students and postdocs: it is a blatant mishandling of privileged information (aka someone else's manuscript)

“The speed of human thought is dwarfed by the flood of information that assaults our senses. Dr. Meister and Ms. Zheng estimated that the millions of photoreceptor cells in a single eye can transmit 1.6 billion bps. In other words, we sift about one bit out of every 100 million we receive”’
Human Thought Is Far Slower Than Your Internet Connection
A new study is “a bit of a counterweight to the endless hyperbole about how incredibly complex and powerful the human brain is,” one researcher said.
