The big curves here, the unwrapped ellipses, recall Rebecca Gieseking's masterful twists in her diagonal shift vases. All the smaller curves are circle arcs. (Not that you have to use circle arcs -- they're just easier to draw and to keep track of.)

Several iterations later and now there's triple the pieces to this pattern (not all pictured). I did a quick mock up of this version using some thrifted fabric and I'm thinking I'll only need a few more adjustments to finish up this design.
