while listening to the latest episode of @coodestreet.bsky.social, i was overjoyed to hear @garykwolfe.bsky.social and @jonathanstrahan.bsky.social dip into a discussion on lucius shepard and his output of marvelous novellas. to me, his work is unparalleled in fantastika literature.

speculative fiction’s heart of darkness thumps louder every time @subpress.bsky.social resurrects the work of lucius shepard.

now i can get MOVE UNDER GROUND and PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT for twenty-percent off! that’s one bitchin’ combo!

robert reed’s “good mountain” is one of the greatest novellas i’ve ever read. it’s a far-future road trip story heavy on enwonderment and melancholy. bittersweet brilliance!

the stories in carol emshwiller’s I LIVE WITH YOU are beautifully wrought, wholly unpredictable, and entirely original. my whole-hearted thanks to @tachyonpub.bsky.social for introducing me to an essential voice in SF.

in my opinion, baen books publishes the best themed anthologies in all of SF publishing. hank davis’ encyclopedic knowledge of SF short fiction is unparalleled. great review by paul di filippo, per usual.

STORYTELLER is an absolute treasure. kate wilhelm interweaves the history of the clarion writers’ workshop with lessons and bits of wisdom for the aspiring writer. i declare this book is a must-have for all SF enthusiasts.

STORY SPOTLIGHT: “the assassin, or being the loved one” by carol emshwiller, appearing in I LIVE WITH YOU.

an achingly tender tale of war and its aftermath, interspersed with bits of wonder and beauty. emshwiller writes like no other.

i am currently reading four DRM-free e-books on my kobo nia: david drake’s GRIMMER THAN HELL (baen books), kate wilhelm’s STORYTELLER (small beer press), carol emshwiller’s I LIVE WITH YOU (tachyon publications), and the drake/flint/baen-edited THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN (baen books). all superb!

a reminder: eight brian hodge works — five novels, three short story collections — are available as DRM-free e-books through the online e-book retailer smashwords. hodge is an unsung master of horror and dark fiction, and slings some of the lushest prose you will find this side of hell.

WEIRD WORLD WAR III is an achievement in modern fantastika publishing. where else can one find an anthology bookended by stories from military SF luminary david drake and cosmic horror master john langan?
December 7, 2024 at 5:38 PM
THE GODEL OPERATION is a far-future phantasmagoric joyride through our solar system that thrills and delights. james l. cambias’ “enwonderment”-inducing billion worlds is now one of my favorite science fictional universes.

STORY SPOTLIGHT: “second front” by @johnlangan.bsky.social, appearing in WEIRD WORLD WAR III.

this masterful piece is a grab bag of pulpy pleasures that includes secret moonbases, nuclear wastelands, lunar gunfights, DIY power armor, and an alien invasion. highly literate (and highly enjoyable) SF.

STORY SPOTLIGHT: “the cold equations” by tom godwin, appearing in THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.

folks, i understand this controversial piece is morally warped and highly illogical, but i can’t deny the gut-punch i suffered when it ended. fraught yet moving.

STORY SPOTLIGHT: “bleak night at bad rock” by @nmamatas.bsky.social, appearing in WEIRD WORLD WAR III.

great characterization and dashes of horror, humor, and history make this not-a-wasted-word piece one of the strongest in the anthology. mamatas writes damned good short SF.

siegfried sassoon’s “the old huntsman” is one of the most affecting poems i’ve ever read.

one of my favorite SF short story collections is sean mcmullen’s COLOURS OF THE SOUL. (which is available as a DRM-free e-book from reanimus press!) “the precedent,” “the engines of arcadia,” and “enigma” are all excellent stories contained therein.

DRM-free e-books are my love language.

today i am grateful for the good folks at @subpress.bsky.social who will be publishing a new lucius shepard collection early next year. they do good work.
