I am a lawyer, an ethicist, a political analyst and a policy advocate. I have a full time faculty position at Loyola University Chicago. However, all opinions expressed are my own. I know quite a bit about politics, public health and healthcare policy.
An important essay. Too much modern academic jargon, but overlook that and deal with the underlying messages. AI is being oversold to recoup enormous investment. It replaces learning with recapitulation. It cause grave environmental problems with no corresponding benefits. It produces mediocrity.
Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia:
doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity.

Who else is old enough to remember Nixon offering dozens of notebooks of highly edited transcripts of the recordings made in his office, saying that these were the important pieces of the available tapes? No one believed that anything but the tapes themselves was enough. Got that Mr. President?

How many warnings about AI monsters, like Zeynep Tufekci's in this morning's Times, do we need before we start serious discussions on what we are going to do about the dangers posed by our over-reliance on LLMs? We at first thought that AI might someday be dangerous, but the danger is already here.

As a professor and as a practicing lawyer for 47 years, I believe that the Posse Comitatus Act prohibits use of the military against citizens. The exception: if the country faces "insurrection."OK,which event was insurrection, the LA demonstrations or the Jan 6 invasion, which Trump did nothing about?

Seriously? DHS is thinking about a reality TV, "Hunger Games" approach to immigration. If you win, you get citizenship. If you lose, you get a one way plane ticket. Why not do this in the classic way, having the contestants compete with swords and shields in the Coliseum? Who are these people?

I am no historian of the Church. Is it too hopeful of me to read into his choice of names the notion that the social gospel started by Leo XIII would be a hallmark of this papacy? Let's face it - the world could use a leader committed to social justice and help for the needy.

They arrested a judge? What the heck is up with that? Anybody have any insight?

How many of us, not Catholic, not Christian, are shedding tears during this mourning of Pope Francis? He seemed like a good man, a spiritual man, a man concerned with the poor, the unempowered like women and the LGBTQ community, victims of war and prejudice.I am moved by his life and his death. You?

I talked of The List, the people, organizations and ideas that the administration is ready to attack. Murkowski's fear is appropriate. She is on The List. I, a Jewish professor with progressive views, am or will be on The List. If you are still reading this blurb, you are on The List. Act now.

I rise to support the Hon. Gentleman from New Jersey, Sen. Cory Booker. The senator is staging a real filibuster against the unacceptable and unconstitutional and illegal actions of the Trump Administration. Who will join me in spporting his effort? If you will, post a reply and then share this.

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." Betcha think that is a dig on lawyers. (I know every lawyer joke. Don't bother.) But you are wrong. It is said by a bad guy in Shakespeare because if you want to conspire to take over the government, the first thing you do is. . . Well, you know.

Hey, MAGAdolts, more than 30,000 people turned out in Denver to listen to Bernie Sanders and AOC tell us what we should be doing. (If your leaders aren't standing up to be counted, they aren't leaders!)This is the future and you, you cheeto powdered twerps, are quickly becoming the past. Bye bye.

I asked what I should tell my students, to get them to think about what policy actions they should take in furtherance of social justice. OK, this is my list. I'd love to hear your reaction. And your recommendations for what else we can do.

What to do?
It was November 6th, the day after we elected Donald J. Trump as President.  Again.  I was sad, a bit confused, afraid of what was to come, ...

Everyone who can should stop what they are doing and watch “Apple Cider Vinegar” on Netflix. This series perfectly captures the lies, grift, and outright manipulation that is done by paid wellness performers. And that is what they are: performers and cons.
People who are into “wellness” are flying that red flag high and proud. They fail to acknowledge what creates a healthy society and are just being individualistic 🚩

We just appointed the top wellness offender to lead our govt’s top health agency. We will pay dearly for this 💔

@govpritzker.illinois.gov is using his "state of the state" speech today to bring the fight straight to Trump/Musk/MAGA.

"My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country.
We don’t have kings in America – and I don’t intend to bend the knee to one."

I try to teach my students about the future of American social justice. What am I to make of Trump's plans: cutting scores of necessary federal programs which benefit millions to keep tax cuts for the rich and powerful, /1

Jimmy Carter was the first big name candidate I worked for. (I drove people around.) But of all
I have worked for or voted for, he was the most decent, values-affirming among them. He made a series of unpopular decisions that the public didn't like. For that, maybe the first modern president.

The number of women who die in the US every year from "maternal mortality" is a lot smaller than you might think. Clearly a tragedy, but maybe we are over-reacting to this real, but relatively limited problem?

The election wasn't a fight over policy or rational positions. Trump won by stirring up passion among a lot of unhappy and angry people, and among another group who wanted to believe passionately in "someone," maybe "anyone." Passion, not raciocination. My blog:
