In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

FORECAST HIGHS: Veterans Day temps in Toledo will remain 20° below average for mid-November, though a noticeable rise takes hold through the weekend. Watch for a bit of a SW breeze tomorrow, increasing to 35-40 mph gusts Wednesday.

Excellent interview by a co-worker, with someone who not only lost a family member that night, but also served on the ship himself for a summer in the 1960s.

Sunday's snowfall at Toledo Express was the most in a calendar day in nearly 22 months! Isolated 4"+ readings were also observed across NW Ohio/SE Michigan, while other locations simply had a cold rain.

Have you been zapped by some static electricity today? I think I'm at 4 and counting as of this writing... you'd think I was shuffling my feet on carpet for hours! Dry air continues to filter in this late afternoon, with dewpoints across NW Ohio dropping near 10-15°.

Dale Wolniewicz woke up to this lovely winter scene in Temperance to lead off the work week. This snow will all be gone by Wed/Thu, with temps warming to 45-50°.

Thousands of ships have gone down in the Great Lakes, but none were as infamous as the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Dan Smith breaks down the science behind the storm that led to this tragedy, and what we've learned since.

Great historical addition to the Toledo riverfront.
The Superior was the lead tug at the 1958 launch of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which tragically went down in Lake Superior 50 years ago tomorrow. It is now in Toledo and will be part of Glass City Riverwalk. Photos from the Superior's arrival in May 2024.

The 13 First Alert Weather Team has declared a First Alert Weather Day, starting early Sunday AM and running through Monday AM (Nov 9-10). This is in light of new data this afternoon edging slushy snow accumulations closer to Toledo, AND nudging totals up for NW counties (2-3″ possible).
November 7, 2025 at 10:06 PM
Wet snow is likely NW of Toledo on Sunday (with some more scattered snow showers Monday). At the moment, western Lucas County could get a coating.

FIRST ALERT: Don't be surprised by the "slushy Sunday" weather with rain changing to snow. Our first snowflakes of the year are likely with the chance of a little snow accumulation (mainly grass, rooftops, cars and trucks, elevated surfaces).

PREDICTOR: Friday morning's rain (and few rumbles of thunder) will be brief, but chances are you'll need the windshield wipers as that line drops up to 1/4" of the wet stuff before clearing by the lunch hour.

10-DAY: Thursday will let us catch our breath before the next breezy day in Toledo, with up to 1/4" of rain sweeping through Friday. Sunday's high could be reached at sunrise, with falling temps + wind helping rain switch over to some wet flakes that evening (lingering flurries Monday).
