The question then is whether it is appropriate for a small number of peers to table so many amendments that the Lords is unable to take a decision on a proposal backed in a free vote by the elected Commons - potentially contrary to the will of both chambers.

Requiring by-elections where an MP changes their party sounds very appealing… until you start thinking through some of the practicalities. Good piece here by @philipjcowley.bsky.social.
Thoughts in the FT on why I don't like the idea of an automatic by election if an MP changes party - but understand why some people do, along with a possible compromise...

Additional time in the Lords announced for the assisted dying bill. Seemed inevitable this would be needed, given exceptionally large number of amendments tabled - as recently documented by @hansardsociety.bsky.social @matthewengland.bsky.social.
BREAKING: The Chief Whip in the House of Lords has assigned an extra ten days in the new year for the assisted dying bill to be debated. This makes it far less likely that the bill will run out of time.

The Dutch election results came as a relief to many centrist voters, but this was not quite the triumphant "return to the centre" it has been portrayed as.

One reflection talking to other Jews today is how unshocking this is.
Numbing, upsetting, scary but not shocking. We all knew it was coming. Given the enormous rise in antisemitic incidents in recent years, it's a surprise it hasn't happened more often.
