I have experienced the Presidency of Michael D Higgins mainly as an Irish person living abroad and always found his Christmas and New Year's Messages particularly affecting and grounded in solidarity with those of us who have ended up outside Ireland. I hope it's something CC carries on.

I'm back in work after 14 weeks of parental leave. I forgot how many emails I get sent. 🫠

We just watched Frankenstein, and really enjoyed it. I realise also now that Shelley's book of her travels around Scandinavia were published only the year before Frankenstein. The del Toro leans very much into the high north aspect of it all.

Really impressed with the guy who did this as a nixer for us. It's a 19th c mirror from Paris that my wife got as a teenager and has been dragging around for the best part of two decades. Finally up! The plaster is very fragile but still mostly on the frame which is a minor miracle.

Watching the House of Guinness and thinking how the fuck did we end up here? Every single historical drama is this same shitty steampunk thing. It's so boring. I really hate the contemporary soundtrack. A decade ago we had really great historical TV shows from below like The Village and The Mill.

Jeg er på toget i retning Oslo! Det regner. Det er mørkt.
Om du har fri på fredag og er interessert i irsk poesi, så kan jeg absolutt anbefale denne feiringen av Heaney's North som fyller 50 år i år. Jeg blir med:

Apropos this story, the phrase "you weren't made in the Glass" was a perennial of my childhood for when we obstructed a view, usually the TV. Wonder has it died out? Are there any other phrases that come from local workplaces like that? www.waterford-news.ie/news/waterfo...

A huge thanks to @daithitoms.bsky.social and Shane Tivenan for a great conversation at Prismatic Pages in Oslo last weekend.
I'm excited to chat with Shane Tivenan and Catriona Shine about (built) environments and their works To Avenge A Dead Glacier and Habitat respectively in October here in #Oslo. Both out from @lilliputpress.bsky.social

There's not much time left for old Tom Cromwell...

These books have been a fairly constant companion during a year I've been mainly too busy and tired to do a lot of reading and I'll be sorry for it to end.
