For @dailydead.bsky.social, I reviewed BUDDY!

"It's a bizarro riff on PBS [kids] programming that goes maximalist with the concept ... Barney & Friends, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and The Wizard of Oz [gone to hell]." #Sundance

We’re crushed to hear that Catherine O’Hara has left us. Horror fans know her work in BEETLEJUICE and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (as well as a memorable appearance in TALES FROM THE CRYPT), but her body of creativity beyond genre is an epic one. Our condolences to all who loved her.

Hey y'all, I'm a bit nervous that I'll be losing my FT job sooner than later (long story) so I wanted to get better at sharing my work just so maybe I can keep building my audience there. 1st up, here's a piece I wrote on a horror classic:

A few months ago, I recapped Season 2 of FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES & I had a lot of fun writing about it, even if this season was extremely uneven (& forgot about the nightmares). Please check it out here: from-the-desk-of-the-horror-chick.ghost.io/whatever-hap...

For @dailydead.bsky.social, I reviewed MUM, I’M ALIEN PREGNANT.

Auckland filmmaking duo THUNDERLIPS blend mumblecore vibes and low-budget body horror into an entertaining sci-fi oddball with shades of SNATCHERS and TOUCH ME. #Sundance
Sundance 2026 Review: MUM, I'M ALIEN PREGNANT is a Gooey Little Sci-Fi Miracle - Daily Dead

For @dailydead.bsky.social, I reviewed Natalie Erika James' body dysmorphia nightmare SACCHARINE.

A little The Substance, a little The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Impressively, James' confident directing style and Midori Francis' lead performance elevate this nasty, sugar-glazed thriller. #Sundance
Sundance 2026 Review: SACCHARINE is a Sickly Sweet Take On Body Horror - Daily Dead
In Saccharine, Australian-American filmmaker Natalie Erika James paints a clear picture of her wheelhouse. This haunted take on fad diet culture bakes in poignancy and bone-chilly accents. What begins...

BUDDY: What if a psycho Barney took over Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and murdered anyone who didn’t shower him with love? That’s just a taste of what Adult Swim alum Casper Kelly cooks up, and it’s a wild one. For me, a twisted meta-midnighter that gets as bizarro as I’d hoped. Oh, I laughed. #Sundance

JOSEPHINE: Beth de Araújo’s drama about an 8-year-old girl having to confront life’s cruelty at such a young age floored me. Little Mason Reeves is a solid lock for my Best Young Performance this year. Bring seventy tissues, a stress ball, and check the trigger warnings, but holy shit. #Sundance

THE SHITHEADS: Macon Blair delivers another very Macon Blair experience. No good, down-on-their-luckers get into dangerous hijinks. Dave Franco and O'Shea Jackson as stoned-ass slackers score belly laughs, but there’s a tonal break halfway through that the film never fully recovers from. #Sundance

LEVITICUS: A queer horror spin on IT FOLLOWS and IT LIVES INSIDE. Familiar in structure, but worthwhile for the perspective shift. Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen are fantastic as lovers who face the demonic terrors of religious homophobia. Well acted, well directed, and darn scary at points. #Sundance

SACCHARINE: Natalie Erika James’ haunted take on diet culture bakes in poignancy and bone-chilly moments. Midori Francis is a strong lead, tapping into the struggles of body dysmorphia while letting genre elements shine. Not the cleanest or zippiest story, but it gets where it needs to. #Sundance
