Finished The Siren's Call by @chrislhayes.bsky.social today. What a helpful and insightful book! Well researched with approachable writing. I appreciated his analysis of how our attention (and lack thereof) impacts our world today, and the hopeful way he ended the book.

As a fellow alum of Multnomah who also had the brief privilege of teaching at Multnomah, this article by @carmenjoyimes.bsky.social resonates with me. I now work IT for a government agency and teach at my church as often as they'll let me. And I wouldn't trade my Bible education for anything.

Fascinating...
The Salem Witch Trials may have been caused by rye bread.

In 1692, after two young girls in Salem, Massachusetts exhibited severe convulsions and other strange symptoms, village doctor William Griggs diagnosed them as having been bewitched. 🧵⬇️

Teaching a How to Read Your Bible class at church. Monday's session is on the importance of context. What passages' meaning is clearly impacted by context? Thinking like Phil 4:13 and 2 Chr 7:14. What else?

Super interesting perspective. Especially for someone like me who loves to teach.
When you are good at, or enjoy, explaining things to people, the temptation is to try and explain EVERTHING.

But once you're outside your two or three areas of expertise, what your audience is learning about isn't the topic, it's YOU.

An interesting biblical theme to notice and a dad joke? I'm in.
A literary 🧵 in John:

Washing his disciples' feet: Jesus takes off his outer garment to serve (Jn 13.3).
At the cross: Jesus' clothing is taken away in humiliation (Jn 19.23).
At the tomb: the linen grave clothes are left folded up (Jn 20.5).

What is this, one wonders, but divine dis-clothe-sure.

On Holy Wednesday, Judas agrees to betray Jesus. Judas had been with Jesus for three years as one of his 12 disciples. It’s a painful, tragic event containing so many lessons. Here’s one of them:

Being around Jesus doesn’t automatically mean we are being formed by Jesus.

"But Jesus never sought to replace Caesar with a Christian Caesar. He came to dismantle the very logic of Caesar: the belief that might makes right, peace comes through violence and politics is best wielded through fear, coercion and control."
