I'd have to check 48 other state codes to be certain, but nah they almost definitely don't call them that in the statutes

For what it's worth, I get SNAP but still call it food stamps. I don't see it as negative or aggressive. I take your broader point and agree, but this is a kinda weird hill to die on.

Within the context of this person's question, it does not "cease to be informal" with your misinformation. Neither West Virginia, nor Oklahoma where I live, has anything labelled in the statute as a "sin tax".

Because I just searched the West Virginia Code on the WV Legislature website and the word "sin" is nowhere to be found. You can find the word "evil" and "evils", but nowhere in the law does the word "sin" or "sins" exist.

It is just an informal term used to describe a broad category of excise taxes on "immoral" things. They are also called vice taxes and sumptuary taxes. My state also has "sin taxes" but it's an informal grouping of laws, it's not a statutory description.
