Speaking of flying squirrels but completely unrelated (genetically), my favorite animals are colugos, aka flying lemurs.

They're not lemurs at all, but they're kind of proto primates in that all primates share a common ancestor with these weirdos before any other mammal on Earth.

I'm revisiting old, unedited photos to find useful pieces for storytelling since it's year-end fundraising season. Check out this gorgeous sunset in the Marula savannah of southeastern Madagascar 🌄

First ever coho! 🎣 I'm still dumbfounded these fish (and other anadromous species) swim hundreds of miles inland to spawn.

Landed a monster of a native Chinook as well, but no pictures 😞

Guess whose photo that is 😎

But seriously, I have an incredible job. Thrilled to be able to contribute to lemur conservation (especially on #WorldLemurDay) and much more thanks to the support of the IUCN and numerous other orgs and people

So incredibly grateful to be part of this team!

Amazing work being done in an amazing place despite extraordinarily challenging circumstances.
🔥We just added 10 miles of firebreaks to protect Madagascar's rainforests!🌳

Our site in Ivohiboro is inside a protected area, but thanks to support from the IUCN SOS program, we've extended our efforts to forest fragments north of Ivohiboro.

Well, I snapped my rod an hour in, but I still managed to catch these guys (first was 23"!!) even though I was missing the rod's end section

Absolutely phenomenal way to close the season on this river

Going #flyfishing at my favorite river for the last time (this season), and I wish I could talk about it.

It's the kind of spot that upends most people's perceptions of what trout fishing looks like. It also produces enormous fish. Most folks that fish it know not to name it.

It's our secret.

The situation in #Madagascar is incredibly worrying, and I'm wishing all my friends and colleagues there the best during these uncertain times.

Hoping these monumental changes lead to a better future for all of the island's people

The land of Gunnison Sage-Grouse 🦃, which I didn't get to see 😠

Something about a bird being endangered makes them hard to find? Annoying.

Anyways, central CO is gorgeous. Here's Needle Rock, an ancient volcanic neck

There's a solemness to winter that often gives way to peace, or at least quiet. I'm feeling a bit mocked by today's bright, warm weather.

This old photo is resonating with me more.

Sunset over the Stuarts 🌄

I'm not exactly looking forward to winter's long nights and short days, but the light that is available at dawn and dusk certainly helps me feel a little better.

As I wrap up a grant report on a lemur conservation project, I'm thinking today about Simone the Greater Bamboo Lemur, the last of her critically endangered species in Ranomafana National Park, and the experience of ecotourism.

#Conservation #Wildlife #Nature #Photography
Wildlife tourism can be tricky.

This is Simone, the last Greater Bamboo Lemur in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar. The species as a whole is Critically Endangered. She represents many paradoxes: companionship and isolation, perseverance and defeat, hope and despair.

🔥🛑 Firebreak maintenance just finished in Madagascar! 🇲🇬

Firebreaks protect Ivohiboro forest from wildfires. The bare soil prevents fires from reaching forest, but the maintenance jobs have also led to a dramatic decrease in fires being set.
