Swedish musician Elfrida Andree (1841-1929) is #Radio3 Composer of the Week 🎉 Andree has a lot of fans on here. A brilliant composer (I especially love her piano trios) her output included opera, symphonies and much more. Also a pioneering female musician and feminist activist.

I confess I knew nothing of Swedish composer Elfrida Andrée’s (1841-1929) music until producer Luke Whitlock suggested her. But then I went down an #Andrée rabbit hole - and what riches! Behind the weasel words and prevaricating euphemisms, Britain's politics of immigration are rooted in an antipathy to the presence of negatively racialised people in this country *on any terms*. If we'd confronted that reality decades ago, and faced it down, we wouldn't be where we are now.
the video goes on and on about illegal immigration and yet the new proposal will target legal migration by confirmed refugees

"As someone working in law, it’s heresy to say this, and it might even kill my chances of a career... But as a trans person, and someone fighting for the rights of my community, I refuse to remain silent. To me it just seems obvious: a heavily prejudiced society produces prejudiced institutions."
It’s no surprise that only 31% of trans people trust a legal system built to enforce prejudice, says Jess O’Thomson.

I guess this the season for ‘what’s up with Remembrance these days’ so i suppose i should suggest an analytical framework. Three phases
1/At the early 1990s Remembrance Day was becoming pretty low key but it starts a big revival in 1994. This was initially to do with the D-Day 50th anniversary.

Labour, Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer specifically, have made the NHS cause intentional harm to trans people.

This is so much worse than before and in a just world they would face consequences.
"They know this is likely to cause suicides. They don’t care! We jumped through every hoop for years and we followed what the government asked of us. I’m in Surrey, her doctor is in Brighton, you can imagine what this is doing to us."

This is disastrous; hospices do such important work, not only to give people a good death, but to provide pain management and other services to people with terminal conditions. The staff in hospices work so, so hard and the fact that these institutions depend on charity to operate is a scandal.

Interested in the history of Seven Dials or London or the 1920s and 1930s? I'm doing some walking tours of the Dials with @stanfordstravel.bsky.social on Sat 15 Nov.

There's loads to see, but Seven Dials is so small you don't need to walk far.

Taps the sign:"Being racist doesn't actually make you racist" is a ridiculous and deceitful position extolled by politicians and media alike.
Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp repeatedly refusing to say that he thinks Reform MP Sarah Pochin saying she doesn't like seeing black people on TV was racist.

Says he wouldn't use her "language" but it's right for her to express "legitimate concerns" about migration
