No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Kudos to @andrewdessler.com and the 83 scientists who joined us in critiquing DOE’s July climate report: it turns out that, with the weakness of that report exposed, OIRA staff concerned that maybe the science does show that climate change harms health and welfare

This admin is so far behind on getting resources to communities (e.g., www.linkedin.com/posts/derric... and www.nytimes.com/2026/01/27/c...) even though they're substantially cutting disaster programs. What a sad pivot from claiming to build capabilities to blaming others for your own failings

The Founders (rightly) thought financial corruption was so concerning they banned it in the Constitution three separate times: the two emoluments clauses, and the only named impeachable offense besides treason.

Starting in 2017, America decided it just kinda didn't matter anymore, whatcha gonna do.
UNREAL: Per NY Times amazing reporting today they found "Trump has used the office of the presidency to make at least $1.4 billion. We know this number to be an underestimate because some of his profits remain hidden from public view." We live in a 3rd world sh*thole! www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

"we show that half of the research published in top journals has disclosable ties to industry in the form of prior funding, collaboration, or employment. However, the majority of these ties go undisclosed in the published research."

Featuring a quote from @jdossgollin.bsky.social!

As Adam notes, the core problem is these scores cannot be validated (in the strictest sense) for future use, because there are too many assumptions about future changes. We need to be transparent about these and look across a range of projections.
Companies projecting property climate risks don't agree on future, let alone historical risks. Limited (or fundamentally unavailable) validation data, different defensible assumptions, etc.,

This is exactly the kind of problem we offer a vision to overcome here: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Climate risk science's greatest project successes have come in part due to transparency and reusability. We show that at the paper-level, there is plenty of room for growth. We talk about why this matters, what researchers can do, and how the greatest progress requires institutional support

If the capitol police reacted on Jan 6 the way ICE did in this encounter there would have been dozens dead
There was amazing restraint and heroism by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department on Jan. 6, 2021. They were viciously attacked by rightwing extremists and rioters incited by Trump.
Also, by their own standards, the cops protecting the Capitol on Jan 6 should have opened fire all over.
