It's an idea that already has the support of the Council of Yukon First Nations and Alaska Native people, whose cultures are also intertwined with the river.

Folks who are like, climate change, what climate change? Dawson City has been recording the Yukon River break-up since the Goldrush (so they could bet on it, of course). Earlier/faster now. I mean, I work with things recently melted out of ancient Yukon ice. An even longer record of same.
Ice broke on the Yukon River at Dawson, YT at 1056am MDT Wednesday. This is the tenth earliest break-up in 130 years of observations. Four of the ten earliest break-ups have occurred in the past decade. #ytwx #ClimateChange @radtek58.bsky.social @jkanadisk.bsky.social @climatologist49.bsky.social

The other week we hosted a sensory walk & art day with YukonU students at Chasàn Chùa/McIntyre Creek. We slowed down to take in the smells, sounds, & textures of spring, and loved how the sun played with branches through shadows that shifted on the water. Grateful for these spaces! #EarthDayEveryday
