This one-piece jumpsuit was an early design from William Ware-Theiss during pre-production on The Next Generation (see the last image for his original sketch). At one point, mockups were made and shown to the producers, including Gene Roddenberry (image 2). This version ultimately didn’t pass muster, and the decision was made to go with the tricolor designs we would eventually see.

The Defector (IMO) is a master class to me in how Riker views Romulans. I always saw that he treated them like second class citizens (The Enemy too). This is such a sad episode and proving that The Federation knows next to none of Romulan culture and protocol. Just quick to judge and jury.
