Corporate rights are being prioritized in the Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement. Read this brief on how these rights are promoted by Canadian mining companies and how they violate the Ecuadorian constitution. Another brilliant @lughiotto.bsky.social paper!

"Motivations of the current president are under particular scrutiny because his family...has significant investments in multiple mining operations at a time Canada and the South American country are moving to finalize a Free Trade Agreement."
As strikes and mass protests rock Ecuador, three Canadian mining projects are caught in the crosshairs: SilverCorp's El Domo, DPM Metals' Loma Larga and Atico's La Plata project.

Protesters are demanding all three environmental licenses be canceled.

Ecuador suspends Canadian-owned mining licence after mass protests
Critics accuse Ecuador's president of a conflict of interest due to his family's investments in a Canadian mining firm that could be shielded by a pending Canada-Ecuador free trade agreement.

The Canada-Ecuador FTA which was negotiated largely behind closed doors will open the flood gates to more Canadian mining in Ecuador, despite clear, wide-scale opposition and deep concern for the negative impacts on water and the environment by the Canadian companies already operating there.
Last week, thousands hit the streets in Cuenca, Ecuador to protect water and the páramo de Kimsakocha from mining.

Protesters are demanding the Ecuadorian government revoke 🇨🇦 environmental licence or face further action.

Incredible show of resistance and clear demands for Canadian mining company Dundee Precious Metals to respect a court-ordered suspension of its Loma Larga project and the TWO binding referendums that banned mining the area where it operates.
Today, thousands of Cuencanos are taking to the streets to march for the protection of water against metal mining, showing an overwhelming opposition to Canadian mining in the paramo de Kimsakocha, Ecuador!

It is clear that Canadian companies operating in Ecuador are rolling the dice hoping that no one is watching. Canada should not be fast-tracking a free trade agreement in Ecuador if it can't ensure Canadian companies play by the rules there.

Why does Canada keep prioritizing the rights of investors over the rights of Indigenous people - both in Canada and in Ecuador? Carney, if Canada is truly in a 'hinge moment,' then its time to hit reset on this Trudeau era trade deal now!
"Indigenous, subsistence farmer, human rights, and environmental organizations in Ecuador have repeatedly expressed deep concern that the trade deal will exacerbate a dire human rights situation and pose a threat to ecologically sensitive areas of Ecuador"
Canada is pushing ahead with a Free Trade Agreement with Ecuador that would protect corporations - even while 100+ environmental defenders have been criminalized for fighting 🇨🇦 mining companies.

We need to hit reset. Trade must never come at the expense of human rights or the environment.
