A quick view of comet 24P/Schaumasse in the vicinity of spiral galaxy Messier 100, from Christmas night, despite the light rain. The comet appears trailed, as it has moved a couple arcminutes in the span of the 40 minutes the data were acquired. More in ALT. #cometWatch #astrophotography #astronomy
A gasy comet, appearing as an elongated green blob, is moving in front of a group of galaxies, with a face on spiral galaxy, Messier 100, dominating the view. The edge-on galaxy near the comet is NGC 4312. There is a hint of a faint tail towards 2° clock from the comet. Equipment: GSO N203/800 with TS GPU coma corrector, unmodified M4/3 MILC. 51x40s (34 minutes of total exposure), starting on 00:30 UTC, 26 December 2025, from Eastern Crete (B4 sky). Edited with DSS and SIRIL.

My grandma used to say "On Christmas Eve, at midnight, animals are speaking and wine runs from the faucet." Tested it. Not true.

Instead some #CometObs in frosty and windy conditions:

3I/ATLAS: 11.4 mag, 2.5', DC4, much fainter now

24P/Schaumasse: 9.7 mag, 5', DC 3/, saw it last in 1993

The nearby star Fomalhaut is orbited by a dust belt. Kalas et al. use coronagraphic imaging to identify a transient source at the edge of the belt. They interpret it as a dust cloud, generated by a collision between two planetesimals. ☄️

Version 1.0 of the paper is finished. The new orbit is safe & sound & I'm scared once again about the hassle with the MPC to get this changed in their databases, as they require observations in ADES format with error margins, telescope or catalogue info. Impossible with early modern visual obs.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
