Recently spent days debugging our home cooling system. Turned out that a fresh air damper was burning out its motor and drawing 5V from the 24VAC control lines. That didn't leave enough voltage to activate the compressor relay, but only when the thermostat was also charging its internal battery.

I'm a shameless Amazon shill, but one of my favorite tricks is to use the "save for later" feature in the shopping cart and then when Prime day hits see what's on sale. That and the 5% extra off with a Prime Credit Card feel like cheat codes.
