But red states appear to be getting their money restored. Just today Montana Renewables was told their $1.4 billion loan guarantee to produce so-called "sustainable" aviation fuel is reinstated.

We begged the California Air Resources Board to reform the LCFS to not subsidize biofuels with fake climate benefits and real pollution. Sad that they appeased the refineries and big ag, ignoring the recs of their own environmental justice advisory council and making this lawsuit necessary.
BREAKING we're taking @airresources.bsky.social to court on behalf of Communities for a Better Environment over the broken Low Carbon Fuel Standard, which would waste billions on polluting biofuels instead of accelerating California's transition to EVs and cleaner air.
Environmental Justice Group Sues California Agency Over Flawed Low Carbon Fuel Standard Changes
The changes would waste billions on polluting fuels over the next decade while harming refinery communities and dirtying California’s air

With one hand Big Ag and the biofuel industry willingly accept $billions in subsidies from the CA LCFS, and with the other they sue to remove California's clean vehicle waiver. It is time for CARB to recognize the harms of biofuels and end this one-sided relationship.

Excellent and welcome paper full of useful factoids on role of soil in past and present climate warming (soils = 15% of climate warming; soil cycles 7% of total atmospheric C annually). A bit hard at times to keep track of cumulative vs current contributions, but key messages sound and on point.

GWP* is a dangerous distraction. The goal of climate action is not to be satisfied with a steady methane concentration in the atmosphere that is well above pre-industrial levels, but rather to stop polluting the atmosphere so that methane concentration can return to pre industrial levels.

See that is the problem. CA is willing to largely ignore all of the costs of biofuels (e.g., nitrate pollution in Midwest, air pollution in Cancer Alley, tropical deforestation, increased hunger) because biofuels score a zero in the CA GHG inventory and these costs mostly occur out-of-state.
Drop the biofuels part and California has almost no chance of getting anywhere near carbon neutrality by 2045 - you're pinning all your hopes on having enough e-fuel production capacity AND enough excess renewable electricity to displace 1-2 billion gallons of gasoline in addition to aviation fuel.

Gorgon CCS is the world's largest pure carbon capture and storage operation. Since 2019, it has been weakly sputtering away out on Barrow Island at Australia's highest emitting industrial facility.

CA displaced 75% of its diesel with renewable diesel and biodiesel (see LCFS data ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/defaul...). If the world follows CA’s example, an additional ~1 billion MT of vegetable oil must be produced, which is 5X the current worldwide production. RD and BD is a false climate solution.

Agreed, there is just so much pain the California consumer will endure. By recently doubling-down on liquid biofuels, CARB missed a big opportunity to further the State's long-term zero emission transportation goals while minimizing the economic impact on lower income California drivers.
On heels of squandering opp to redirect billions in LCFS revenue to EVs instead of polluting biofuels, Newsom talking big about keeping EVs funded despite lack of budget surplus and limited cap-and-trade $$ needed for decarbonizing buildings and other sectors. smh
