Ten years after Pope Francis published Laudato Si' and changed the climate conversation from just science, technology, and economics to include how they're grounded in ethics and faith, @richard.wickedproblems.earth went to the Vatican to find out whether it made a difference.
The Pope, the Terminator, and a Wicked Problem walk into a bar.

If you told me 2 yrs ago I'd spend a week in the Vatican w them I'd say you were nuts. But then if 20 years ago you told me the Catholic Church would be standing up for climate science vs denialist freaks I'd have you committed.

Episode 2: Carbon Suckers

Who’s going to clean up the mess?

We hear the story of how all climate plans are dependent on one big idea. But it might not even work, and we didn’t vote for it. And it all started in Swedish paper mills...

God of wonders, hear the cries of those in distress.
Perhaps the most ominous satellite presentation we've seen. Cat 5 Melissa within 2 hours of landfall in Jamaica. Winds at 185 mph (tied for 2nd highest on record). Pressure at 892 mb (tied for 3rd lowest). Will be one of strongest Atlantic storms to make landfall ever recorded.

Industrial livestock doesn’t just pollute our waterways & wipe out biodiversity, it also threatens our very existence.

On a per capita basis, Ireland is among world’s worst livestock polluters.

Was listening to @laurielaybourn.bsky.social's @overshootpod.bsky.social final ep while editing this - in some ways the ClimatePilgrim.com series is stumbling around looking for the "ethical and psychological" cope with the post-1.5°C world we've entered, to which Laurie devotes the last section.

@aradwanski.bsky.social preview of Carney’s likely climate strategy confirms that Canada is, yet again, refusing to deal with the oil and gas sector, which generates around 1/3 of Canada’s emissions. Carney is gambling w Canada's economic future & he should know better. 🧵

I see Carney's reversal as a sign moral cowardice. A refusal to act on his past convictions and fight for the good.

I'm not a practitioner of his religion, but I can't help but feel that Pope Francis saw clearly to heart of matters in his 2023 LAUDATE DEUM
