A cautionary tale from Octavia Butler which we did not heed.

To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool...."

This is terrifying in America. ICE agents are showing up masked—these abductions must stop. If you’re going to detain someone, show your face, present a warrant, and proper ID. Disappearing people from their families without evidence or accountability isn’t law enforcement—it’s state-sponsored fear.

If one of us stands up, they can pick that person off. If ten or a hundred or a thousand, they can pick those people off. And they're picking off people--immigrants, dissidents--to make an example of them. But if ten million people stand up, they cannot stop us all.

We can surrender to the forces of autocracy, bigotry, xenophobia, and minoritarian rule.

Or we can organize the pro-democracy majority to reclaim its power.

TODAY WE MOBILIZED OVER 3 MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE NATION!!!

This movement has entered the next chapter: the people will mobilize again, and again, until we make a difference.

It only takes 3.5% of the population in a sustained resistance in order to make a difference.

We need 3.5% of the American population to strike. If we go on strike without this, people will struggle even more. We hear you about signing up - it’s scary right now.

But if you’re someone who is adamantly against the use of the strike card, we still want to hear from you…

They are arresting people on the streets, terminating their visas, and disappearing them for writing things they disagree with. This is where we are. Two months in. Right now. If you think they won’t begin coming after citizens soon, you are mistaken.

If, for example, Trump says nobody is allowed to dance, on penalty of death, he has no legal power to make that declaration and no power to enforce it, but if everyone stops dancing it's as good as if he did. Reporting as though Trump has these powers helps give him those powers.

This is an attempt to criminalize free speech and suppress dissent. If we don’t take a strong stand against this, it’s the end of our democracy, and not just higher education. Universities are the trial balloon, but it doesn’t end here. Next, it will be employers, cities and towns, and individuals.

This is a pretty big attack on the First Amendment. And an encroachment on universities' powers to decide what protests to allow and who to expel.....
We need to talk about Trump’s threat to defund universities unless they arrest and expel protesters.

We’re watching classic fascistic institutional capture in real time and if this continues unabated we’re going to look up and live in a world without escape. The time to fight is now.

Donald Trump has disgraced the United States of America in countless ways since he first entered political life ten years ago.

But he had never disgraced the nation as badly as he did today.

He has brought shame on this country to an extent I had never thought possible. And he has only just begun.
