This week I wrote about a provocative new study in Mol Psychiatry. The authors claim that most studies of post-mortem human brain tissue are invalid because the gene expression patterns change.

I read it closely and I am…. not convinced. See why ⬇️

New guidelines out from @alzassociation.bsky.social
on the use of blood-based biomarkers.

Disappointing that they are for memory centers and not primary care where I think they have the most utility helping docs triage patients for referral

Just watched Secretary Kennedy's Speech to HHS Employees.

Key takeaways:

(1) NO ANNOUNCEMENT OF FIRINGS!

(2) Generally positive tone about science and scientists

(3) Set up some strawmen about lack of transparency but promising a new era of transparency

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general.

If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

Defying defiance to the laws. Good for NIH!
BREAKING

On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders

On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.
BREAKING: NIH admits funding freeze is illegal, will resume issuing grants

This administration is determined to implement their priorities in the most bad-faith, disruptive way possible. If we are all about “merit” now why not just merge the Diversity F’s with the others? Ridiculous
The CSR comm I'm on just pulled all Diversity F grants from the current review cycle. These apps are reviewed alongside (and by the same criteria) as all other F grants. So, instead of helping these trainees, they will actually be punished by having their grant reviews delayed at least 1 cycle !?!?

One day, one toe in the water with Ambient AI Scribes. Interesting. I did not find it to be a game changer for documentation burden, but perhaps it is a paradigm shift back to being able to capture patient stories with detail and expressivity in a way busy clinicians may struggle to do. 9/x

I’m no fan of echo chambers but the critics of movers to Bluesky under-appreciate:

1) X has become the same thing but for the other side
2) X’s culture has bent to the whims of its owner (which is fine! But he’s not my style)
3) X’s algorithm rewards divisive, loud, controversial takes.

First day on Bluesky and @theverge.com has reactivated their account and Mark Cuban is posting about RSS feeds and I am so here for it
Congrats to @bluesky for all the new users

My 2 cents. Find every news source the has an RSS feed or equivalent and create accounts that that show their public deeds on here under @johndoetimesfeed

That way we all get access to news without having to wait for them to create accounts first.
