So here's what my game looks like so far. It's got a grappling hook with very springy physics and will be focused on speed and maybe some combat. I'm calling it 'Claws of Thunder' and hopefully there will be a playable demo some time in a year or two.

Some #art of friends' #OC s I did for them.
I should probably publicly open for commissions later. Would just need to set up a paypal business account is all.

Linux experience so far has been a mix of either "this thing works better and faster and more elegantly than Windows" or "this thing took me an hour of googling to get working" with very little in-between.

There's a whole lot of story I want to tell in the form of a comic, but the main thing holding me back besides my debilitating ADHD is my instinct to test the limits of my skill. Slowly though, I'm figuring out a flow that reconciles the desire to improve with the need to finish the product.
the advice I always give about comics making in a professional context is not expecting to draw everything at your 100% like each panel is a single illustration; it's about getting your 60% to be Good Enough. if you don't have deadlines tho, different story depending on what ur trying to accomplish

Anyone else wonder all the time what video game items/powerups taste like? Like I imagine this potion being a thick syrup of artificial cherry flavor and red 40.

The PS2 truly is the best console ever because it is constantly becoming more powerful. Each time we say something "looks like a PS2 game" we're talking about a game of a higher fidelity than the last. What the PS2 is capable of in 2025 is so far beyond what it was capable of in 2003. That's amazing

Now my enemy lineup for the first handful of levels is complete. I'll be fine-tuning them all as I put together actual levels. #gamedev

Experiments for the next enemy type have begun. Figured out wall crawling navigation similar to the zoomers from Metroid. Got it to be pretty good at handling sharp convex corners but I still need to work on contingencies so it doesn't get stuck on concave corners too steep. #gamedev

Almost finished with the first lineup of enemies. This is Red Tread. Very special since he was based on a character some friends and I played in a D&D campaign a few years ago. #gamedev

Found out that Krita has a normal map brush that uses the angle detection of pens that support it to determine the color.
I could have had a way less miserable time putting together my normal maps this whole time and idk if I should be mad or happy that I've made work 10 times easier.

would you join her on the FIREBLU couch?

Pirate Software? yeah I do that all the time. Quite often it's the only choice for playing games that are out of print. Not like the developers would see my dime if I bought a used physical copy anyways.

What bothered me the most about the shootemup genre while I was trying to get into it was that unlike platformers, you don't have much control over the pace which you go through a level. Not many chances for a mental breather, and one small lapse in concentration can kill you instantly. (Cont.)

Trying to fix the fact that I'm pure ass at shootemups. After sifting through dozens of games I think Thunder Force IV is my best teacher. Drop dead gorgeous game but also clicks with me the most with how it paces its obstacles in the early-game.

Digging inside a multi-thousand volt miniature particle accelerator was one of the scariest things I had to do, but my CRT is back from being dead for a year! All it needed was a replacement for one transistor that shorted. I think I can carry out electronics repairs with a lot more confidence now.

Since I'm working at a PC all the time I figured these vertical mice that's supposed to be easier on your wrists is a good investment. Did not dissapoint. Very comfortable + clicking feels like you're pulling the trigger on the joystick of a mech so FPS games feel way more immersive lol.

Call me crazy but I vastly prefer the blue shirt+red/green overalls palette for the Mario bros. Since red and green are their defining colors, it makes more sense for the overalls (the most prominent piece of clothing besides the hat) should be red/green while the shirt is blue for an accent color.

As I was working on the rest of the first lineup of enemies, I found there's a lot of duplicate code or very similar code that needs to be shared/refactored. I'm finding myself having to think outside the box with object composition more than I ever have before. Anything in the name of efficiency.

I need some very broad and aggressive block lists to keep AI slop off my feed. Anyone know where to search for these?
July 10, 2025 at 5:22 PM
Making particle effects is so funny to me like WTF do you mean I can use the same stupid ink blot I made with a Krita brush and it can turn into all these different smoke and flame patterns?

Needing to write a list that breaks big tasks into smaller steps so I don't get stuck in analysis paralysis, while also hating that it makes me feel like I'm doing monotonous busywork.

AuDHD makes it really fucking hard to stay productive.

LRTs: yeah it's that same shit I keep seeing out of JP devs. Sakurai probably isn't committing to using GenAI himself, but just passively accepting that it's something that improves efficiency in game development still sits wrong with me, because it pretty provably doesn't!

My dad needed to move more things out of storage so I now have an electronic drum kit in my custody. (I've already been taking a lot of his old music gear).
Playing drums is way harder than it looks, as it turns out. Takes a lot of work to get your feet to play ball with what your hands are doing.

So funny thing about my game's MC. I was flying by the seat of my pants when I made the sprites. There was no set-in-stone character design ahead of time. Since then I've went through several drafts trying to figure out what he should look like up close, and I'll probably go through many more. (1/2)
