Divisive debate on #AssistedDying has been like a doubles tennis match:
2 players have hurled balls regardless how they hit or hurt,
But other 2 players close to the net have started talking to each other.
Time to find a safer assisted dying model.

Assisted dying bill:
The HoL may wish to ask
❓ Why over 300 every day in the UK cannot access the specialist palliative care they desperately need
❓ Why specialist palliative care services in AD jurisdictions have their funding stalled or reduced

Assisted dying bill:
The HoL may wish to ask
❓ Why every AD jurisdiction has expanded its criteria (inc. Oregon)
❓ Why there was more evidence on thalidomide than exists on AD drugs/doses
❓ Why AD reports contain so little data and why some produce nothing (eg. Dignitas)

Assisted dying bill:
The HoL may wish to ask
❓ How many cases of suffering are caused by inadequate or ignorant care
❓ About the impact of AD on a stretched & exhausted NHS
❓ Why no AD drug has ever been approved by any regulatory authority in the world

Assisted dying bill:
The HoL might want to question why
❓2 isolated docs assess requests without monitoring or consultation
❓ Drugs approved by a minister, not UK regulatory authority
❓ Specialist palliative care not a requirement
❓ Unclear on capacity, scrutiny eligibility & law.

A panel whose only job will be to tick box the assessments of 2 isolated doctors with no monitoring at any point.
Not rigorous or safe

Psychiatrist Allan House was permitted, like me, to speak to the assisted dying committee - but only after it first tried to ban @rcpsych.bsky.social’s testimony.

Pls read his letter.

How is the committee remotely serious about protecting the vulnerable if it dismisses the doctors who treat them?

KL has misunderstood the point about the need for multidisciplinary assessment.

This needs to happen at the start, replacing the single doctors working alone.

Tacking on a panel at the end achieves zero. How will the psychiatrist assess capacity without the patient present?!

Disclosure of abuse among people with life-limiting illness was more likely when a trusted relationship with the practitioner was established, and privacy and confidentiality provided.

But health and care professionals lacked confidence in identifying abuse within context of life-limiting illness.

So you can mention other care without explaining that care, how it can help or referring to a specialist.
This amendment is meaningless.

Disabled campaigners have raised serious concerns about the fairness of the committee of MPs that is carrying out detailed examination of a bill to legalise assisted suicide, after it prevented any disabled people’s organisations from giving evidence in person.
Committee examining assisted suicide bill ‘is skewed’, ‘a stitch-up’… and may have breached UN convention

Voting to block hearing oral evidence from the Royal College of Psychiatrists
Is NOT
Openness, balance or fairness
Today the crossparty committee examining the assisted dying bill kicks off proceedings, hearing expert witnesses next week. Kim Leadbeater MP didn't have to allow oral evidence but she has, didn't have to include a 3rd day of it but she has. Openness, balance & fairness intrinsic to her approach.

My wonderful husband died in May after a long battle with cancer.
He slipped away peacefully at home with me besides him.
I was so relieved when he was finally at peace. I am horrified by a conversation about assisted dying that could have taken place.
I'm relieved to have been spared that.
