At its best of times, work in the criminal legal system is Kafkaesque. And, lately, more often than not, it’s like it also has an axe to grind.

For three decades, a little-known group of “mitigation specialists” has helped save death-penalty defendants by documenting their childhood traumas.

Take a rare look inside one case:

They’ve been running for 90 min. Average foot speed over uneven ground, barring injuries, is 4 mph. That gives us a 6 miles radius. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area.

Anyone know of funds, organizations, etc to help out federal workers while they’re furloughed and/or working without pay?

Working with many federal employees, I can say they are generally hard working, good folks. I (and I hope others) want to help out as the first paychecks are missed.

I’m going to be requesting reargument in my last Seventh Circuit appeal because Birdie and Junebug were not present to set the tone for the day.
Wait. Stop everything. Start court rufform here. every court should have floofs.

Everybody has to have swag. I’ll give it to the court, this is a solid cup.

My student argues a clinic case in the 7th Cir today. It’s great to see students have an opp. to see their work come to fruition and argue a case in a circuit court, something many attys never will do. It’s also nerve wracking (at least for me, the supervisor who basically can just watch) 1/2

I'm horrified to hear that Charlie Kirk was shot at an event in Utah.

Democratic societies will always have political disagreements, but we must never allow America to become a country that confronts those disagreements with violence.

Mark and I are praying for Charlie's recovery.

And, naturally, my students and I head down to federal court in Chicago in a few weeks to have one of the students are a case.

Just a reminder of my favorite idea for a law student note: Pick an important Supreme Court case from 5-10 years ago, and see how lower courts are interpreting it. It's helpful for practitioners and courts, and something law students can research and present effectively.
