Movie reviews, news and interviews since 2004. We particularly love the unusual and absurd – kung fu, giallo, Czech New Wave, etc.

A gripping, strikingly de-glamorized portrait of North Jersey gangster life. The wise guys we see here are working stiffs who put themselves at grave risk w/o seeing much profit. Hell, unlike in GOODFELLAS, which owes an obvious debt to FAMILY ENFORCER, they don't even get to enjoy good food or blow

#Watched Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League (2025) - didn’t much care for the first BN, but Batman in an Elseworlds where the entire Justice League are brawling Yakuza in a floating Tokyo? A Yakuza Hurricane is exactly the kind of stupid nonsense I’m here for. Though shouldn’t it be a Yakuza Typhoon? /1

Joe Pesci is 83.
Here’s the pivotal scene from Goodfellas when he gets elaborately whacked by the mob for killing Billy Batts.

Shit, I didn’t think anything could ever happen that would actually make me feel bad for the Patriots under any circumstances. But here we are.

Commentators saying how brilliant the defense is. You know what I want to watch, two teams that are amazing at offense and shit at defense.
Seriously, tell me my game doesn’t look more fun 😆

and way more murder

Jfc, this game may somehow be more boring than the halftime show. The Blood Bowl game I played this morning was more exciting.
And then Ricky Martin popping up like, hey, what if we had a performer with an actual good voice and stage presence.
Gaga briefly waking me up from the deadly dullness of Boring Bunny.

#Rereading Corum #4: The Bull and the Spear (Moorcock ‘74) - the 2d trilogy truly feels like a different beast, better written, tighter plotting. Recollected it being more Irish, but man it is so deeply based in Celtic mythology, with the main antagonists being ersatz Fomorians (the “Fhoi Myore”).

Ten points for anyone who knows what film series this is from without looking it up.
Okay, another great one for the collection:

Loot that drops after defeating me:

- half empty pack of gum
- several one dollar bills
- several iPhones
- a signed 1980’s membership card to the Tick’s Mystic Order of Arachnid Vigilance with promotion sticker
- lots and lots of Kleenex

Okay, was not going to chase Watchers with Watchers 2, just let it run to see who was in the credits but then:

Skeleton dance in DAVY JONES' LOCKER (1900). By the turn of the century, there was a movie shortage with demand far exceeding supply. At Biograph, Fred Armitage combined unrelated 1890s footage of a skeleton marionette and a shipwreck to create a ghostly mashup.

#Watched Send Help (2026) - Raimi does his own version of Triangle of Sadness/Misery/Swept Away so of course it’s even nastier than any of those (even Lina threw in a little genuine sweetness). Watching a complete lunatic and a total asshole bounce off of each other - consistently entertaining.

@senplus.bsky.social @puritythrufire.bsky.social @wonggifs.bsky.social apropos of our conversation, I pulled up the old omnibus this morning to start rereading some original AvP Dark Horse comics.

Must say, got a ton of watching and reading done on last week’s long flights. Watched 3 Oscar noms below and an old Rohmer.

Plus I finished the Russ Meyer book, two volumes of Frieren, Saint Young Men v2, Batman Urban Legends v1, The Yellow M, and Matt Arnold’s Eden. Felt good.

I watched sentimental value on an airplane. I have watched mutant girls squad in the theater twice now.

#Watched Sentimental Value (2025) - Solid old-fashioned drama about multiple generations of mental illness. I was kind of ready to hate Reinsve’s character again at first (theater people! shudder!), but she grew on me a bit. Like a mopey fungus. /
