NEW FROM CBO: brutal distributional analysis of House GOP "Big Beautiful Bill"

On avg the bottom 30% of households get poorer under the GOP bill

Avg gets little - and are worse off if you include tariffs

This'd be the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in history

Who *actually* makes up the 8% of Medicaid enrollees who aren't working?

It's low-income women in their 40s and 50s who were recently working but aren't anymore--because they're either looking for work or serving as caregivers for parents, kids, and spouses.

People are *not* as supportive of Medicaid work requirements once they learn that: 1) most people on Medicaid are already working, and 2) many would risk losing coverage due to paperwork challenges.

Support drops from 62% to 32%.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., a key swing district member, tells me he’s a “lean yes” on the emerging reconciliation bill. He says he wants to avoid a tax hike and he’s fine with the Medicaid spending cuts. “Work requirements are generally popular, so I don’t have a problem with that.”

The House GOP reconciliation bill blocks an important #Medicaid eligibility/enrollment rule making it easier for low-income Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in Medicare Savings Programs that help pick up premiums/copays and also lead to auto enrollment in the Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy.
Eric Roberts and @joefigs.bsky.social led a groundbreaking new study on Medicaid and Medicare, out today in NEJM. I’m lucky to have been a part of it.

Medicare saves lives. But is it enough to save lives of the most vulnerable Americans? The study suggests no; Medicaid still matters. (1/11)
Loss of Subsidized Drug Coverage and Mortality among Medicare Beneficiaries | NEJM
A total of 14 million Medicare beneficiaries receive the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), which reduces cost sharing in Medicare Part D. Losing the LIS may impede medication access and affect mortality. U...

Work requirements do not work.

If enacted in 2026, national #Medicaid work requirements could result in:

📉 Up to 5.2M adults losing coverage
💼 449,000 jobs lost
💰 State GDPs could shrink by up to $59 billion
💸 $4.4B drop in state and local tax revenue

📍 See the projected state-by-state impact ⤵️
How National Medicaid Work Requirements Would Lead to Large-Scale Job Losses, Harm State Economies, and Strain Budgets
States could see billions of dollars in reduced economic activity, lower state/local tax revenues, and large job losses if Medicaid work requirements are imposed.

The same baseless talking points about Medicaid are coming up in the Senate Finance confirmation hearing for Dr. Oz, falsely characterizing people who enrolled due to Medicaid expansion as a monolith of "able-bodied adults."

This is simply not true.

“The one thing that Pathways seems to do well is waste taxpayer money on consultants and administrative costs.”
NEW: Georgia’s governor promotes his Medicaid work requirement as a national model for reform.

Yet the program has cost taxpayers $86M, three-quarters of which has gone to consultants, and enrolled less than 3% of the quarter-million Georgians eligible.
Georgia Touts Its Medicaid Experiment as a Success. The Numbers Tell a Different Story.
Only 6,500 participants have enrolled in a program that has cost taxpayers more than $86 million — a warning for other states looking to impose restrictions on Medicaid in a second Trump presidency.

Community health centers (CHCs) are still locked out of federal grant dollars, despite the pause on the funding freeze.

What's the ripple effect? CHCs can't pay their employees and could be forced to close certain services--or close down entirely.

There are multiple reports that states are unable to request federal Medicaid funds at this time. If not resolved quickly, it could have significant ripples across the health care sector and major impacts on states financial stability. #Medicaid #healthpolicy
If the Trump administration's funding freeze extends to Medicaid, every state would be affected.

Medicaid is the largest source of federal revenue to states. The ripple effects of a freeze in Medicaid payments would be enormous, affecting hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors.
