It's worth watching the discussion between Bronwen Maddox and Israel's president, Isaac Herzog at @chathamhouse.org. Although it is commendable that Herzog participated in the exchange, he largely resorted to smoke and mirrors and to cynicism when answering criticism of his government. (1/7)

The Trump administration has taken the scavenger-hunt craze to new levels. First, they shared live details of the attacks against Iran via a Signal chat, and now they are leaving details of their meetings with POO-thin sitting in hotel printers. What lucky days for journalists!

Hard for the EU to respond to Trump’s 30% tariffs, since the US exports mainly fossil fuels and over-invoiced pharma and F-35s. Best to focus on taxing US digital services exports. And maybe a 100% tariff on US movies that get a one-star review by both the Guardian and the FT?

Germany’s prosperity and peace depend on the rule of law, both domestically and internationally. Chancellor Merz’s capricious support for the illegal bombing of Iran as ‘the dirty work Israel does for all of us’ (www.zdfheute.de/politik/g7-g...) is wrong 👇🏻 and goes against our national interests.

Life's tough. If Germany scores poorly in tonight's @eurovision.tv song contest, it's seen as proof that our music sucks. If Abor & Tynna score well, it's proof that our economy sucks, according to @robin-j-brooks.bsky.social. I prefer the latter – their song is a banger: bsky.app/profile/coda....
Here's the link between Germany's #Eurovision song contest performance and macro: Germany started tanking after the Euro zone debt crisis, as the high-debt South took it out on Germany's musical talent. As Germany's growth began to suck recently, its ranking in 2024 improved. Misery loves company...

Why did the dollar fall after Trump's tariff frenzy on 2 April, and why did it rise after he blinked? It's largely an equity story, as @arebucci.bsky.social explains – investors have moved out of US equities as high tariffs cloud the earnings outlook and vice versa. See also bsky.app/profile/chri...

@ygorodnichenko.bsky.social, @morgenrothedgar.bsky.social, @dalekirby.com – this👇 should be obvious to you. The idea that Germany is trying to cater to Russian tourists is ludicrous at best – not sure what you like about it. I agree with @morgenrothedgar.bsky.social:
bsky.app/profile/morg...
Before Covid, German hotels had 34.6m tourist arrivals per year, of which 0.8m came from Russia (2.3%). By 2023, tourist arrivals had recovered to 30m. However, arrivals from Russia remain at 0.1m (0.3%) because the European Council suspended the EU's visa facilitation agreement with Russia.
