One of the things I love … love! … about tabletop rpg scenarios is the flexibility of outcomes and the emergent story based on player responses. Stat blocks be damned. The players, their actions through their characters, and the results of those actions … they are the story. Emergent story!

Kim Mohan is one of the greats in the RPG industry and a great person. He taught me so much. Kim deserves to be in the Museum of Pop Culture and Seattle's Science Fiction Hall of Fame. I'm grateful to know that others can learn more about him and his amazing career.

In an RPG, if you were to run a monster that has two or more stages or forms, each stage representing a change in capabilities and playstyle, would you want one stat block with abilities labeled by stage or one for each stage? Does it depend on complexity?

I'm working on some badass monsters, and 4e monster design was better for them, especially as that edition grew in monster-design wisdom. Elites and solos from 4e felt better in play then than 5e legendaries do now. The good news is that some of the 4e virtues can be replicated in 5e.
