The Senate may choose to vote together on the DHS and LHHS bills. Thus, a filibuster on DHS may mean no funding for NIH. What my colleagues are saying:

“Shut it down, public health will understand. I’ll work without pay again.”

This is Alex Pretti.

This morning he was murdered by ICE. Six ICE agents held him down and shot him at point blank range. Alex was a nurse and researcher at the VA.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones and we stand united in action calling for the abolishment of ICE.

New court filings show DOGE staff secretly & illegally accessed and leaked Americans’ Social Security data and still can’t say what was exposed or where it went. Cool. Cool cool cool. Cool cool cool.
The Trump administration admits even more ways DOGE accessed sensitive personal data
New court documents reveal even more ways DOGE improperly accessed and shared sensitive personal data last year — and how that data appears to have been used to advance dubious fraud claims.

I enjoyed participating in an informal discussion about NIH with @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social, @markhisted.org , and Sarah Kobrin (in their personal capacities) last evening.

Good discussion and questions.

tl:dr Lots of bad things are happening but, working together, we can make a difference!

Mike Lynch is Schumer's Chief of Staff (mike_lynch@schumer.senate.gov), Tasia Jackson is Jeffries' CoS (tasia.jackson@mail.house.gov). Write to them. Their bosses need to step up. @filipecampante.bsky.social's post below gives you the reason why.
Judging from Brazil’s experience under the military regime, I’d say the opposition party needs to actively help mobilize civil society. A demobilized society won’t defeat the regime electorally, and mobilization needs help from organized opposition parties.

America is in dangerous territory.

The combination of a masked federal paramilitary force being used against civilians, the intentional spread of extremist ideology, and the censorship and use of “science” by the state to harm specific groups of people has never ended well.

From this moment forward (and before, but clearly now):

-If you vote for money for ICE.

You are complicit. This is the gestapo. You're on the wrong side. You can't pretend not to know.

Remember when these guys lied that they were preserving Confederate monuments because you had to leave up the whole messy contested historical record rather than erasing history?
More than 400 years of history and a decade of advocacy were torn down Thursday afternoon when National Park Service employees removed every single display at the President’s House.

A thread on why scientists also need to be activists:
1. I’m not surprised this happened. This is the side of open data sources we don’t talk about: there’s an assumption that everyone will access the data in good faith. (More on this in a min)

2. This is a sneak peak into the kind of BS thay NIH, HHS, and other fed R&D is about fund.

This misuse of children's data has been known for years by NIH. Accountability is overdue. We need real enforcement and an honest reckoning with how genomic data can be weaponized. We are witnessing a renaissance of scientific racism--federal institutions are both ignoring and encouraging it.

In October, ICE grabbed Maher Tarabishi.

He was a 24/7 caregiver for his disabled son Wael.

At the time of Maher’s detention, disability advocates warned that taking away Wael’s caregiver put his life at risk.

Wael died on Friday at age 30.

ICE caused his death.

They didn’t get to say goodbye.
Disabled son of ICE detainee dies after 30 days of hospitalization
It had been months since Wael Tarabishi seen his father. The family is calling on ICE to release Maher Tarabishi so he may attend his son's funeral.
