Conservation social scientist exploring the human side of fisheries and wildlife, with a love for wild Florida. Women of Fisheries co-founder. Mom x 2. she/her

Hi new followers! Thought I'd take a second to introduce myself. I’m a Florida-based marine biologist-turned fisheries scientist-turned conservation social scientist, & I study the human side of nature.

How did I go from biology to people science? Here are 3 things that explain my science journey:
Longshot, but I know we have some fisheries folks here: does anyone happen to have this pub?

Really appreciating this paper that thinks about survey respondents as a potentially over-extracted common pool resource.

"It may be time to think about just how many respondents we have eaten and about how we might work together to sustain future populations."

Getting an early start on the Halloween garden - all decorations homemade by the Crandall fam mostly from repurposed stuff (amazing what you can do with pool noodles and discarded fake flowers!)

We love ourselves a holiday 😄

Once upon a time we used to make science videos of our friends for fun; was reminded today that this year is the 10-year anniversary of Seagrass Savanna, our short film about Savanna Barry’s super cool seagrass research 😄

Deeply obsessed with this chaotically-written manuscript, featuring Simpsons references, punctuation such as “???”, and a final thoughts section that simply reads: “There is no need to summarize key points in a 2,000-word manuscript. Screw Flanders.”

Did I fill my office plants with tree spirits this week cuz it brings me joy and we all need a little more whimsy in our lives?

Why yes, yes I did.

Did know know that there are autism superpowers? My own diagnosis journey has helped me understand why some things are so challenging for me, but also why I’m really good at some things that have helped me in life & work. We often focus on challenges; it’s important to highlight strengths too!

We spotted this in our evening walk and it led me down a rabbit hole of rusty spider wasps info!

Turns out these female wasps paralyze their spider prey then drag it back to their nest like here, lay one egg, attach it to the spider, & bury it. Once hatched the larvae has spider dinner!

Periodic reminder that there is a whole science of communication that helps us understand things like misconceptions, misinformation, confirmation bias, etc. & how to navigate them.

Just like we can have science-based conservation management, we can have science-based conservation communication!

Increasingly convinced that art and science are two sides of the same coin and aren’t actually different things at all, it’s all us humans trying to understand / capture / describe / make sense of our world and create new things to add to it

A friend’s first person, personal account of the impacts of position cuts to federal science and scientists. I appreciate Holden sharing his story with us.

“I’ve poured my life into my work. I didn’t just lose a job, I lost core pieces of my identity, my community, and a sense of purpose.”
“As the federal government quietly dismantles key scientific institutions, Holden Harris writes from the front lines of a vanishing public service. His essay highlights the human cost of defunding science & the quiet unraveling of the systems that help us understand, protect, & live with the ocean.”

Women of Fisheries turned 7 this week!

Once upon a time a few of us got together and said “hey what if we did this thing?”…

7 years later and we are still going strong! Cheers to all, stoked to celebrate another anniversary! 🥳
