Knox Pryce tucked his jaw into his collarbone to watch the doc’s fingertips run along the edge of his shoulder, along the boundary where the real ended. Where his skin met his plastic. “Good. The skin isn’t taut anywhere,” he said. “Your scans are good too. The osseointegration has gone perfectly.” His Californian accent was subtle. He’d been in England too long. Absorbed too much rain. “In plain English, doc,” Brigadier Wilson requested. “Knox’s bones have completely attached themselves to the alloplastic material- uh- the prosthesis, that is,” the doctor replied. “It’s on the limit of where we want to be, but honestly, I anticipate no complications.”

A quiet, contemplative scene that breaks up the total chaos.

She unzipped the front of the tent, the rasping teeth sawing at the tranquillity around them. Tio crawled onto the crispy tarp inside - and Berry looked up at her, smiling gently as she rolled a joint into shape in her hands. Her long pink hair was still a mess from the midday wake-up call Tio had forced her into hours ago. Tio had spent the previous night there, waking up to an unholy alarm - a sarcastic gift from her sober mind. Even though nothing was worse for hungover eyes than the flare of the sun through a fluorescent orange tent canvas, she felt a brief pang of nostalgia for waking up in the cloying collective sweat of three friends sleeping in a tent together, with wallowing morning giggles as they recalled the night before’s stories. Another wave of regret hit her. That was never going to happen again.
