Remembering that hideous Daily Mail story about Jews hiding their gold and jewellery when arriving as refugees. Of course they did if they had any. Would Daily Mail journalists and editors do any differently if they were in a similar plight? Such a failure of emphethetic imagination and compassion.
Govt minister Alex Norris is asked if the govt will take jewellery from people [fleeing war and persecution]. Norris says the govt won't be taking peoples wedding rings but they will seize assets.

I’ve been frustrated to see so much of the ongoing story about asylum seekers and the protests against them covered without hearing from those seeking asylum and now being met with hostility and hatred

I set out to speak to those directly affected to find out about the impact this is having 👇
We escaped war and torture but now we feel unsafe in Britain
Special report: Amid protests and rising aggression towards asylum seekers across the country, we spoke to those being targeted

It’s genuinely hard to see how Labour’s response could be worse.

The racists don’t just want hotels closed, they want refugees chased out of town. They need to be told *by the fucking government* that that is not legitimate.

How are we to have a civilised country if the govt won’t defend refugees?
Update: Cooper now says she “agrees with local communities that all asylum hotels need to close”, but in an orderly way.

Once again telling racists their concerns are legitimate, offering a prissy technocratic solution which won’t satisfy them, no word of solidarity with refugees affected.

Abject.

There is no way in which any such plan could be compatible with either the Refugee Convention or Customary International Law.

Vile drivel and gimmicks as per usual from Starmer's "Labour" party.

People on student visas claim asylum in two principal scenarios:
👉 The visa was a way to escape their country, for their own safety
👉 They arrived here not thinking of asylum, but something changed to mean they can’t return safely

Neither of these phenomena is problematic or requires a crackdown.

A terrifying thought. Kent County Council looks after more unaccompanied asylum seeking children than any other, and it is now led by Reform. We already know Reform don’t care about the safety and wellbeing of these children, and now they’ll be in charge of what happens to them.
The local authority that is responsible for caring for the highest number of unaccompanied asylum seeking children across England is now led by Reform.
Final Kent County Council result:

Reform: 57 (+57)
Lib Dems: 12 (+6)
Conservative: 5 (-57)
Green: 5 (+1)
Labour: 2 (-5)

This response from @sbearbergman.bsky.social to @hildur.bsky.social’s post has changed my week— it is so wholesome, and human, and so the energy we all need right now. And Kerstin Langenberger, the naturalist who posted “I am on my way with the necessary equipment”? This woman is the hero we need.

Syrians who have lived here, learned new languages, adapted & become part of new places, built lives, careers & homes with us here, are dreaming of walking down their own streets again 😭❤️

Let anyone who tells you refugees want anything other than to return home be SILENT now.

The Council - "So you were a victim of torture at 16yo, trafficked for 18 months in Libya and then spent a year being street homeless and travelling trying to find somewhere safe? You must be able to cope with the streets now then!"
The woman is from Eritrea and speaks no English, talking to us through a translator she explains how she was kicked out of her asylum seeker housing after being given a right to remain here as a refugee - but instantly then became homeless

She is cold, wet and terrified with nowhere to go

‘More than one in three children in poverty as UK deprivation hits record high’

I’ve long believed if we counted children in poverty, and had the same level of media scrutiny on this as we did quarterly Migration stats, our society would be very different
